Vitalik Buterin criticises Elon Musk over ‘path to authoritarianism’ on Twitter
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has criticised billionaire Elon Musk for his approach to content moderation on Twitter.
Acting «quickly and decisively in response to catalysts» when the action in question is banning things is the path to authoritarianism.

“Acting quickly and decisively in response to catalysts, when it comes to bans, is the path to authoritarianism,” Buterin wrote in a discussion about censorship on the social network.
The latest wave of bans on Twitter связана с профилем ElonJet, который отслеживал самолёт Маска и публиковал информацию для общего доступа. Миллиардер увидел в этом угрозу конфиденциальности и заблокировал в том числе аккаунт создателя бота Джека Суини.
The platform also restricted profiles of journalists who covered ElonJet, and the Mastodon account, where media representatives continued to report on Twitter’s blocks. After this, Musk swiftly rolled out a new moderation policy that bans tracking someone else’s location.
According to a poll conducted by the billionaire, the majority of users did not support the decision to block. Of 3.7 million participants, 58.7% voted for the immediate removal of the restrictions, compared with 41.3% for unlocking after a week.

Buterin also proposed that Twitter notify users 30 days before introducing any new content moderation rules.
I think I would favor a 30 day notice period for introducing any new content moderation rule.

On December 19, Musk launched a new poll on whether he should step down as Twitter’s CEO. At the time of writing, 15.5 million users had participated, with 57.3% wishing for the billionaire’s ouster.
Musk pledged to follow the poll results.
Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll.

The poll closed. It drew 17.5 million users. Of them, 57.5% voted for Musk’s ouster.
On October 28, Musk closed the deal to buy the social network for $44 billion.
Earlier, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao predicted a positive impact of the new owner and Twitter’s head on the platform’s development.
