Vitalik Buterin donates over $600,000 to COVID-19 relief fund

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin donated 100 ETH and 100 MKR for a total of over $600,000 to a COVID-19 relief fund in India.

The fundraising campaign was launched by Polygon founder Sandeep Nailwal. He urged the global crypto community to help India in the fight against COVID-19.

Nailwal also pledged full transparency of the funds, regulatory compliance, and expense reporting.

Following Buterin, the former Coinbase chief technology officer Balaji Srinivasan joined the campaign. He transferred 21.7463 ETH (almost $55,000 at the time of writing).

But if all you have is Twitter, help spread the word. For every RT, I’ll donate another $50 to fight COVID in India, up to $100k. #cryptovscovid https://t.co/eKlOlccelv

In March, Buterin stated that NFTs may find application in philanthropy and funding for public goods.

In February, the largest hospital on the Cape Cod peninsula in Massachusetts received about $800,000 in the first cryptocurrency.

Earlier, the children’s charity Songs of Love created a superhero Billy Bitcoin to boost interest in donations in digital assets.
