Vitalik Buterin: Ethereum 2.0 has proven to be a tougher challenge than expected
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said he has no doubt about the transition to ETH 2.0. This is possible despite the greater technical challenges involved. He shared his reflections on Peter McCormack’s popular Bitcoin podcast.
“I have no trouble admitting that Ethereum 2.0 has proven more technically challenging than we expected. But I am convinced that we have not found any fundamental flaws that would make its implementation impossible. It’s only a matter of time, and progress has been evident lately,” he said.
This is how the Ethereum co-founder answered the host’s question about whether he feels that the project he created has become significantly more complex than the original idea and could crack under the burden.
Buterin noted that some Ethereum projects may become part of history, while others will succeed. But these processes will be independent of each other.
“If Ethereum tries to fit into one space and proves not particularly useful there, applications built on it in other sectors will continue to operate,” he explained.
The discussion, which also included Blockstream’s chief strategy officer Samson Mow, was built around assessing the ability of the developers of the second-largest cryptocurrency to fulfil their numerous promises.
The staunch Bitcoin maximalist Mow criticised Ethereum supporters for apparently changing the project’s goals without acknowledging its experimental nature. He also questioned whether there is a clear understanding within the community of what Ethereum is.
World computer or money after all?
Buterin noted that non-financial applications have been an integral part of the project since Ethereum’s creation. He said that the claim that the second-largest cryptocurrency is money came from outside. Buterin added that neither he nor anyone else in the Ethereum Foundation said so.
Earlier in July, Vitalik Buterin shared a screenshot of a code snippet for merging a functioning blockchain with ETH 2.0. The day before, in the Ethereum 2.0 testnet, occurred an unplanned fork.
