Vitalik Buterin Proposes Enhancements for Ethereum Security

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and developer Tony Warshtetter have proposed a gas limit of 16.77 million for individual transactions.

Their proposed improvement, EIP-7983, aims to enhance Ethereum’s security and resilience against DoS attacks. This mechanism would also simplify the calculation of on-chain operation costs.

If a transaction’s gas limit exceeds 16.77 million, it will not be included in a block and will be rejected during formation.

“This value allows for the execution of most current tasks, including smart contract deployment and complex DeFi operations, while ensuring stable network performance,” the description states.

The current gas limit set for an entire block is 36 million.

If EIP-7983 is adopted, the proposed limit of 16.77 million will apply regardless of the block gas limit set by miners or validators.

The proposal also aims to improve the functioning of virtual machines based on zero-knowledge proofs (zkVM) and encourage the division of large transactions into smaller ones.

Buterin and Warshtetter emphasized that the change is not backward compatible with previous versions. However, it will affect only a small portion of users and decentralized applications, as most current transactions do not exceed the specified limit.

In May, the Ethereum Foundation launched the Trillion Dollar Securit initiative as a “cross-ecosystem effort to enhance Ethereum’s security.”

In July, the project team published its first report, identifying six major challenges for the network.
