Volodin proposed discussing a ban on online anonymity after the Kazan shooting

The Speaker of the State Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, after the Kazan shooting, said there is a possibility to discuss a ban on anonymity online. He wrote this in his Telegram channel.

Volodin noted that the world “has changed a lot over the last few decades,” and that new technologies and the Internet “brought not only progress but also problems that have become a serious threat, especially for children.”

\n\n

“There are proposals to move away from anonymity on the Internet, which, supporters of this idea say, would dramatically reduce the volume of content that propagandizes violence and glorifies extremism. This needs to be discussed,” wrote the Speaker of the State Duma.

\n\n

As a reminder, since 1 February 2021 in Russia a law came into force, obliging social networks to independently identify and block illegal content. Among such information are calls for terrorism or its justification, as well as materials that “promote a cult of violence and cruelty”.

\n\n

Russia has previously considered limits on online anonymity. For this purpose, Roskomnadzor studied anonymous and decentralized networks that allow bypassing the agency’s blocks.
