Wikipedia to Harness AI for Workflow Automation
The Wikimedia Foundation, the entity behind Wikipedia, has unveiled a new strategy for the development of artificial intelligence.
The non-profit organization does not intend to replace human labor with AI-generated text. Instead, the technology will be used to create features that “remove technical barriers.” This will allow individuals to “spend their precious time on what they want to achieve, rather than on finding a way to solve a problem.”
Investments will be directed towards specific areas:
- automation of moderators’ workflows;
- enhancing information accessibility and saving time;
- scaling the process of attracting new volunteers;
- automating translation and adapting local topics.
The Wikimedia Foundation intends to prioritize transparency and open-source artificial intelligence.
“Providing free access to knowledge for anyone on the planet is Wikipedia’s mission, whose importance has only increased with the advent of generative AI. This is why the resource is at the core of every learning model. With this new strategy, we make a promise to the world we serve and commit to the volunteers who have made—and continue to make—Wikipedia the largest encyclopedia humanity has ever known,” the organization emphasized.
Back in October 2023, French philosopher and publicist Gaspard Koenig described ChatGPT as the antonym of Wikipedia.
