Wormhole to Leverage AMD Chips for Enhanced Scalability

The blockchain interoperability platform Wormhole is set to employ enterprise-grade hardware accelerators from AMD to scale its inter-network connections.

The project will utilize AMD Alveo U55C and U250 FPGA accelerators to enhance the throughput of cross-chain messages using zero-knowledge proofs (ZKP).

The company is implementing technology to create secure “corridors” between blockchains.

“Light ZKP clients require substantial computational resources and high-performance enterprise-grade hardware to achieve verification at the same speed and efficiency as current methods. This is where AMD comes in,” explained Wormhole co-founder and COO Dan Reecer.

As part of the partnership, the chip manufacturer will not only supply the hardware but also provide expert support in optimizing Wormhole’s cryptography for the accelerators to ensure optimal speed and efficiency.

“We will continue to keep the ecosystem updated on advancements in this collaboration and Wormhole ZK, including the mainnet go-live of Light Clients on chains like Ethereum, Sui, Aptos, Near, and Cosmos,” stated Reecer.

According to the statement, Wormhole facilitates cross-chain communications for over 30 blockchains, utilizing more than six different execution environments. Since its launch in 2021, the platform has processed transactions worth approximately $30 billion and transmitted around 1 billion messages.

In November 2023, trading firm Jump Trading spun off Wormhole into a separate business.

In February, the platform announced an airdrop of its own token W.
