The fundraising effort has now moved to the JuiceBox platform, where donations have reached 316.75 ETH (~$890,000 at the time of writing).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-eu.googleusercontent.com\/AkUzwMutgeeGj0C5utOWkhYk3Eu24uLnXf40b7ZTX4nuXgbg40wEtRd4uu2nu-yL8TdeRvqhb3007oq23rP8Q7BbysVT3h7oJJalOm5jJd-GBDPCx7N9zkdlun_pSecYt0xGeFAWu3HidcUo8XA3Q2w\" alt=\"GoFundMe Halts Fundraiser for Tornado Cash Legal Fees\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Data: JuiceBox.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Since January 2024, Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm and developer Alexey Pertsev have been raising $1.5 million for legal representation. For this purpose, the <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/tornado-cash-developers-launch-fundraising-for-legal-defense\">JusticeDAO fund<\/a> was established. The initiative has been supported by former <span data-descr=\"National Security Agency of the USA\" class=\"old_tooltip\">NSA<\/span> and <span data-descr=\"Central Intelligence Agency of the USA\" class=\"old_tooltip\">CIA<\/span> employee Edward Snowden, as well as members of the crypto community. <\/p>\n<p>In August 2022, <span data-descr=\"Office of Foreign Assets Control of the US Treasury\" class=\"old_tooltip\">OFAC<\/span> added Tornado Cash to its sanctions list for involvement in laundering over $7 billion in illicit funds. <\/p>\n<p>That same month, Alexey Pertsev was arrested. In April 2023, his pre-trial detention was changed to house arrest.<\/p>\n<p>Later, U.S. authorities also charged Roman Storm and another co-founder, Roman Semenov. The former was subsequently released on bail.
