They realize the network needed to shed that &#8216;energy-guzzling casino&#8217; brand, right?\u201d wrote a user named Emmanuel Awosika.<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Buterin added that PoW was \u201calso quite centralized.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\n<cite>\u201cIt was just not talked about as much, because everyone knew it was only a temporary stage until PoS. And that doesn\u2019t even get into how we probably mostly avoided ASIC miners only because there was no incentive to build them due to the upcoming PoS switch,\u201d he explained.<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In September 2022, Ethereum developers transitioned the blockchain to Proof-of-Stake as part of the major upgrade known as The Merge. Since then, the network&#8217;s energy consumption has decreased by more than 99%.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2024, Buterin <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/vitalik-buterin-the-next-five-years-are-crucial-for-ethereum\">stated<\/a> that the next five years are \u201ccrucial\u201d for Ethereum&#8217;s mass adoption and its acceptance in the \u201creal world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In April, he discussed the next phase of the project&#8217;s roadmap \u2014 The Purge.
