[\u2026] This Republican-led resolution would unjustifiably limit the SEC&#8217;s ability to establish appropriate protections and address future issues,\u201d the statement reads.<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In his letter, Biden noted that his administration \u201cwill not support measures that jeopardize the well-being of consumers and investors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hours before the president&#8217;s decision, groups lobbying for major banks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aba.com\/-\/media\/documents\/letters-to-congress-and-regulators\/ltrbidensab121.pdf?rev=b945eed54a1c4d95aab57c4179ddedc9\">sent<\/a> him a letter urging him not to veto the resolution. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\n<cite>\u201cSAB 121 effectively prohibits regulated banking organizations from offering digital asset custody at scale, as it considers them as owned rather than merely held by the banking organization. [\u2026] Institutions forced to record digital assets held on their balance sheets are subject to higher capital, liquidity, and other prudential requirements compared to their non-bank competitors,\u201d the statement reads.<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On May 30, Senator Cynthia Lummis, Representatives Patrick McHenry, Tom Emmer, and others <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lummis.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lummis-McHenry-Letter-SAB-121.pdf\">sent<\/a> their own letter to Biden with the same message\u2014do not veto.<\/p>\n<p>On May 16, the U.S. Senate passed a joint resolution <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/us-senate-votes-to-repeal-sec-directive\">annulling SAB 121<\/a>. On May 8, the White House administration announced the president&#8217;s readiness to veto the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Biden&#8217;s advisors emphasized that repealing the directive would hinder the SEC&#8217;s ability to \u201cprotect investors in cryptocurrency markets and ensure the safety of the entire financial system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SAB 121 was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/oca\/staff-accounting-bulletin-121\">issued<\/a> in April 2022. The document provides guidelines for the custody of cryptocurrencies. Specifically, banks must reflect them on their balance sheets, making the process costly and limiting institutions&#8217; ability to offer custodial services on a large scale.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2024, four industry organizations <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/us-banks-seek-greater-role-in-bitcoin-etf-management\">appealed<\/a> to the SEC to ease SAB 121. Commissioner Hester Peirce described the Bulletin&#8217;s provisions and related guidance as <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/hester-peirce-criticizes-secs-regulatory-approach\">\u201ca pernicious weed.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In May, Cardano co-founder Charles Hoskinson claimed Biden aims to <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/charles-hoskinson-accuses-biden-of-aiming-to-kill-the-crypto-industry\">destroy the crypto industry in the U.S.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Uniswap suggested that the current head of state <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/uniswap-founder-criticizes-bidens-approach-to-cryptocurrency\">might lose<\/a> the upcoming election due to his administration&#8217;s dismissive attitude towards the cryptocurrency market.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/survey-majority-of-us-cryptocurrency-holders-support-donald-trump\">Paradigm survey<\/a>, 48% of voters holding digital assets plan to vote for Donald Trump in the November election. 38% prefer Biden, while 13% remain undecided.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. President Joe Biden vetoed a document that would allow regulated companies, including banks, to hold cryptocurrency on their balance sheets.
