The initiative stems from concerns that AI lab technologies are being sold to military forces engaged in combat, allegedly violating Google&#8217;s own policies.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, the corporation <a href=\"https:\/\/futureoflife.org\/open-letter\/lethal-autonomous-weapons-pledge\/?cn-reloaded=1\">pledged<\/a> never to work on military technologies. However, in April 2024, it <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6966102\/google-contract-israel-defense-ministry-gaza-war\/\">emerged<\/a> that cloud computing services and AI access were provided to Israel&#8217;s Ministry of Defense.<\/p>\n<p>The magazine noted that the letter dated May 16 references information about the use of artificial intelligence by Israeli military forces for surveillance and target selection for bombings in the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAny involvement in military and weapons production negatively impacts our position as a leader in ethical and responsible AI, and contradicts our mission and stated AI principles,\u201d the document states, which was signed by about 5% of employees.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The mentioned <a href=\"https:\/\/ai.google\/responsibility\/principles\/\">principles<\/a> state that the company will not engage in AI applications that could cause \u201coverall harm,\u201d contribute to the creation of weapons, or other technologies for inflicting damage.<\/p>\n<p>According to TIME&#8217;s sources, three months after the document&#8217;s circulation, there has been \u201cno significant response\u201d from Google.<\/p>\n<p>The corporation acquired DeepMind in 2014.
