No fees from either\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 friend.tech (@friendtech) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/friendtech\/status\/1832581118165709140?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 8, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The transactions effectively locked the system in its current state, preventing any further &#8220;changes to fees or functionality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Currently, no fees from either the smart contracts or the [site] friend.tech are being directed to the team&#8217;s multisig wallet,&#8221; the statement reads.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The changes did not affect the Friend.Tech web client, allowing the application to continue operating indefinitely.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;The end of an era is not at all what I imagined,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/0x5f_eth\/status\/1832596754258100464\">wrote<\/a> Ethos founder Serpin Takst.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He mentioned he would have purchased the project&#8217;s technology for integration into his own protocol, but &#8220;now it&#8217;s all over.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Friend.Tech was launched on August 10, 2023, on Ethereum&#8217;s second-layer network Base, supported by Coinbase. The decentralized social platform integrated with X allowed participants&#8217; profiles to be tokenized.<\/p>\n<p>Less than three weeks after a successful start, the community began discussing the project&#8217;s &#8220;death&#8221;\u2014active users, fund inflows, and collected fees plummeted by ~90%.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2024, the Friend.Tech team launched the second version of the protocol and <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/friend-tech-token-plummets-from-169-to-1-4-following-airdrop\">conducted<\/a> an unsuccessful FRIEND token airdrop, marred by technical and organizational issues. After the distribution, the token&#8217;s price collapsed from $169 to $1.4.<\/p>\n<p>Subsequently, the asset&#8217;s price fell <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/friend-tech-token-plummets-30-amid-migration-proposal-from-base\">by 30%<\/a> following a proposal by Friend.Tech co-founder Racer to move the protocol from Base to its own blockchain.<\/p>\n<p>Amid the team&#8217;s abandonment of smart contracts, the FRIEND token&#8217;s price dropped by ~26% in a day. The asset is trading at $0.06 with a market capitalization of $5.6 million.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Friend.tech-Price-FRIEND-Live-Price-Chart-Market-Cap-News-Today-CoinGecko-Google-Chrome.webp\" alt=\"Friend.tech-Price-FRIEND-Live-Price-Chart-Market-Cap-News-Today-CoinGecko-Google-Chrome\" class=\"wp-image-240673\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Data: CoinGecko.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to a dashboard on <a href=\"https:\/\/dune.com\/21co\/friendtech-analysis\">Dune<\/a>, the project&#8217;s <span data-descr=\"total value locked in smart contracts\" class=\"old_tooltip\">TVL<\/span> fell from a peak of $50.78 million in September 2023 to just over $4 million.<\/p>\n<p>The number of users of the Web3 social network is ~918,000, but in August, the daily number of new connections fell below 10. Data: Dune.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, since its launch, the platform has earned ~$86.3 million in fees, distributing ~$44.7 million among content creators.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Farcaster and Lens Protocol Also Stagnate<\/h2>\n<p>The popularity of the blockchain-based social network Farcaster initially <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/farcasters-user-base-expands-ninefold-following-frames-launch\">surged<\/a> after the launch of Frames functionality in late January. The solution allows developers to embed various interactive features directly into messages.<\/p>\n<p>In May, the platform <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/blockchain-social-network-farcaster-secures-150-million\">raised $150 million<\/a> in a round involving Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Haun, USV, Variant, Standard Crypto, and others. Farcaster co-founder Dan Romero stated that the funds would support the platform&#8217;s development &#8220;for many years to come.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, the daily number of new accounts in the social network fell from a February peak of ~15,000 to 545 by September 8, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/dune.com\/filarm\/lens-vs-farcaster\">Dune<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The number of daily active users (DAU) peaked at around 104,000 in June but has since declined to 60,000. Daily registrations fell from a peak of 37,000 in February to 142 by September 8.<\/p>\n<p>DAU decreased from a peak of 42,281 in July to 8,368.<\/p>\n<p>According to X user MayDay Crypto<strong>, <\/strong>the issue with <span data-descr=\"decentralized social networks\" class=\"old_tooltip\">DeSoc<\/span> projects is that they attempt to build &#8220;on blockchain&#8221; analogs of traditional social networks without any innovations in functionality and user interface.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The problem with Farcaster is that it&#8217;s trying to &#8220;build&#8221; what is already there &#8220;but on blockchain&#8221; without any UX\/UI innovations.
