Yet it has drawbacks \u2014 notably the risk of low liquidity when large amounts of tokens are locked at the consensus layer, reducing their availability for other uses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To tackle this, the L1 project Berachain proposes an innovation aimed at addressing liquidity constraints, allowing assets to be staked while simultaneously being used in DeFi protocols.<\/p>\n<p>ForkLog examined the project\u2019s main features; its mainnet launch is expected in late 2024.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">EVM-identical and soulbound tokens<\/h2>\n<p>Berachain presents itself as an <span data-descr=\"in the crypto community the term \u201cEVM-compatible\u201d is more common\" class=\"old_tooltip\">\u201cEVM-identical\u201d<\/span> modular layer-1 blockchain using Proof-of-Liquidity (PoL) consensus. It is built with the <span data-descr=\"an open-source framework for building blockchains\" class=\"old_tooltip\">Cosmos SDK<\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>PoL enables users to earn rewards for supplying liquidity in the form of <span data-descr=\"such assets are also called soulbound tokens\" class=\"old_tooltip\">non-transferable<\/span> Berachain Governance Tokens (BGT), which determine the weight of future rewards for stakers.<\/p>\n<p>The system lets users stake tokens and, at the same time, use them to provide liquidity in DeFi protocols.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\n<cite>\u201cFor example, imagine that ETH could be used both to secure the Ethereum network and to participate in other DeFi protocols such as Uniswap and MakerDAO,\u201d said the developer under the pseudonym Smokey the Bera in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblock.co\/post\/227344\/berachain-funding-new-layer-1-blockchain\">The Block<\/a>.<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cEVM-identical\u201d means Berachain can automatically adopt upgrades to the Ethereum Virtual Machine, ensuring full compatibility \u201cwith all <a href=\"https:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%A3%D0%B4%D0%B0%D0%BB%D1%91%D0%BD%D0%BD%D1%8B%D0%B9_%D0%B2%D1%8B%D0%B7%D0%BE%D0%B2_%D0%BF%D1%80%D0%BE%D1%86%D0%B5%D0%B4%D1%83%D1%80\">RPC<\/a> namespaces,\u201d as stated <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.berachain.com\/learn\/#berachain-evm-identical-%E2%9F%A0\">on the project\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This allows developers building for Ethereum to port their applications without significant code changes.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\n<cite>\u201cUnlike EVM-equivalent and EVM-compatible solutions, which may require developers to make changes before deploying applications, Berachain precisely reproduces Ethereum\u2019s execution environment,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coingecko.com\/learn\/what-is-berachain-crypto-proof-of-liquidity?utm_campaign=learn&#038;utm_source=x&#038;utm_medium=social\">explained<\/a> CoinGecko analyst Joel Agbo.<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The platform is built using <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.berachain.com\/learn\/what-is-beaconkit\">BeaconKit<\/a>, a modular framework for developing layer-1 blockchains and L2 solutions.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\n<cite>\u201cThe idea of Berachain is to develop a cost-effective, secure, high-performance, user-friendly and liquidity-rich network. Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.berachain.com\/learn\/pol\/participants\">Berachain<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>BGT issuance resembles reward accrual in PoS networks, but distribution under PoL differs in several respects.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\n<cite>\u201cAlthough validators issue BGT depending on the weight of tokens delegated to them, neither they nor their delegates receive BGT directly. Instead, they acquire the right to choose which rewards vault to direct their token issuance to,\u201d Agbo explained.<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In such rewards vaults, users can lock supported assets to receive a share of the BGT issuance that validators allocate to vaults. It also creates a market for applications that can compete for the asset.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\n<cite>\u201cApplications will create incentives that set an exchange rate between BGT sent to a vault and a certain amount of another asset. For instance, a vault may offer incentives to validators by paying 30 USDC for every 1 BGT that flows into the vault. In turn, a DEX may offer 10 of its native tokens for each 1 BGT,\u201d the expert noted.<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A three-token economy<\/h2>\n<p><strong>BERA<\/strong> is the network\u2019s native (\u201cgas\u201d) token. It pays fees for transactions and smart-contract operations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Holders of BERA can stake tokens to earn rewards in BGT.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BGT<\/strong> is a non-transferable governance token. Market participants who secure the network receive it by depositing BERA and other assets into vaults.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Validators participate in staking BGT, receiving these tokens as rewards for verifying blocks. Although they cannot dispose of the coins directly, they may direct them to rewards vaults in exchange for additional incentives.<\/p>\n<p>BGT will be used in the DAO as a governance token. Holders can vote directly or delegate their rights to others.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The DAO will decide on key matters for the ecosystem:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the range of assets supported by vaults;<\/li>\n<li>proposals concerning the development of <span data-descr=\"decentralised applications\" class=\"old_tooltip\">dapps<\/span>, and so on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>BGT can be swapped for BERA at a 1:1 rate via a burn process.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>HONEY<\/strong> is Berachain\u2019s native stablecoin with a \u201csoft peg\u201d to the US dollar. According to the project, it is designed to provide a stable, reliable medium of exchange within and beyond the ecosystem.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The token is issued through a dynamic procedure controlled by a vault router \u2014 a smart contract that accepts collateral stablecoins to mint HONEY and manages the deposited collateral.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Berachain controls several vaults for supported stablecoins. The vault router moves collateral into the appropriate asset vault and creates an equivalent amount of HONEY. However, BEX will charge trading fees from 0.05% to 1% depending on the volatility of the assets involved. An additional 0.1% fee will be distributed among BGT holders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The gasless feature will allow users to pay for operations using the asset being swapped instead of the native \u201cgas\u201d token BERA.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Account abstraction will also be implemented to improve the user experience. Off-chain transactions using relayers will be available, opening up deferred transactions and helping users save on fees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another option on BEX is exclusive (permissioned) pools. Access may be conditioned on specific parameters or actions.<\/p>\n<p>The DEX also allows storage of idle user assets. Excess collateral offers a simpler way to trade on the exchange, saving users the hassle and cost of transferring tokens for each transaction.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lending platform BEND<\/h3>\n<p>BEND lets users borrow stablecoins against their crypto assets. Unlike BEX, where users must deposit supported LP tokens into rewards vaults to earn BGT, on BEND borrowers can directly claim their soulbound assets.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BERP \u2014 a platform for trading perpetual contracts<\/h3>\n<p>The trading platform uses HONEY as the base token and enables liquidity providers to deposit the native stablecoin into a vault to earn BGT. It began as the NFT project <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bongbearsnft?lang=en\">Bong Bears<\/a>, founded by pseudonymous market participants <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/smokeythebera\">Smokey the Bera<\/a>, Dev Bear and Papa Bear.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2023 the Berachain team raised $42m in a Series A funding round led by Polychain Capital. Participants included Hack VC, Shima Capital, Robot Ventures, Goldentree Asset Management, Tendermint co-founder Zaki Manian and Celestia founder Mustafa Al-Bassam.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In early 2024 the developers <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/berachain-team-launches-public-testnet-for-l1-blockchain\">launched<\/a> the public Artio testnet.<\/p>\n<p>In April the project <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptorank.io\/ico\/berachain\">raised $100m<\/a> in a Series B round led by Framework Ventures. Other investors included Brevan Howard Digital, HashKey Capital, Tribe Capital and Arrington XRP Capital.
