The move also covers corresponding amounts in Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin Satoshi Vision and Bitcoin Gold created by hard forks.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2024, a US court sentenced Lichtenstein <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitfinex-hacker-sentenced-to-five-years-in-prison\">to five years in prison<\/a> for laundering funds stolen from the exchange. His wife, Heather Morgan, received <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/heather-morgan-sentenced-to-18-months-for-bitfinex-hack-involvement\">18 months in prison<\/a> for assisting in the criminal operations. Both pleaded guilty and agreed to return the stolen assets.<\/p>\n<p>As for the remaining ~25,000 BTC, prosecutors said their seizure will require an \u00abadditional forfeiture procedure\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Those funds were laundered by the convicted using various means, including unregulated exchanges, darknet markets, mixers and other services and actions. As a result, the assets cannot be characterised as the \u201cspecific property\u201d Bitfinex lost in the hack.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2024, authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/us-authorities-recognize-bitfinex-as-sole-victim-of-2016-exchange-hack\">recognised<\/a> the exchange as the sole victim in the incident.<\/p>\n<p>In December, Lichtenstein <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ilya-lichtenstein-admits-sole-responsibility-for-bitfinex-hack\">published<\/a> a video message from prison in which he said he planned and carried out the Bitfinex hack alone.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US prosecutors have asked a court for permission to return to Bitfinex almost 80% of the 119,754 BTC stolen in the 2016 hack, according to a request.
