{"id":20473,"date":"2025-01-20T16:25:17","date_gmt":"2025-01-20T14:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/coinbase-accuses-fdic-of-concealing-pause-letters\/"},"modified":"2025-01-20T16:25:17","modified_gmt":"2025-01-20T14:25:17","slug":"coinbase-accuses-fdic-of-concealing-pause-letters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/coinbase-accuses-fdic-of-concealing-pause-letters\/","title":{"rendered":"Coinbase Accuses FDIC of Concealing &#8216;Pause Letters&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The consulting firm History Associates <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.ctfassets.net\/sygt3q11s4a9\/21w7Dvb1WsJC3ypKnOn9S5\/fa0030897f32d14356ece5c521318a1f\/-27-_History_Associates_Status_Report.pdf\">reported<\/a> that the <span data-descr=\"Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation\" class=\"old_tooltip\">FDIC<\/span> failed to provide dozens of &#8216;pause letters&#8217; requested during litigation initiated by the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/coinbase-backed-suit-claims-fdic-omitted-more-bank-crypto-pause-letters\">Cointelegraph<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-text-wrappers-keypoints article_keypoints\">\n<p>The FDIC issued &#8216;pause letters&#8217; from March 2022 to May 2023, urging banks to temporarily halt crypto-related activities and requesting information, including cost analyses and marketing materials.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>According to whistleblowers, the federal agency has been &#8216;systematically obstructing <span data-descr=\"Freedom of Information Act\" class=\"old_tooltip\">FOIA<\/span> requests.&#8217; History Associates believes this approach led the FDIC to mention only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdic.gov\/foia\/history-associates-inc-v-fdic-fdics-redacted-pause-letters-january-3-2025\">25 letters<\/a> in their case, omitting at least 150 more documents.<\/p>\n<p>Coinbase&#8217;s Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal stated that they were interested in all &#8216;pause letters&#8217; ever reviewed by the FDIC&#8217;s Office of Inspector General. Nonetheless, they are willing to consider a separate request for those letters.<\/p>\n<p>History Associates plans to amend the lawsuit with new allegations against the agency.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, Wyoming Senator Cynthia Lummis threatened the FDIC with <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/cynthia-lummis-accuses-fdic-of-hiding-crypto-oversight-documents\">criminal charges<\/a> if the agency indeed destroyed documents related to crypto oversight.<\/p>\n<p>Back in June 2024, Coinbase <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/coinbase-sues-sec-and-fdic-over-lack-of-transparency\">sued<\/a> the <span data-descr=\"U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission\" class=\"old_tooltip\">SEC<\/span> and FDIC over their attempts to &#8216;cut off&#8217; the crypto industry from the banking sector.<\/p>\n<p>The exchange seeks access to fully unredacted versions of the &#8216;pause letters,&#8217; as most are heavily redacted, complicating their understanding.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The consulting firm History Associates reported that the FDIC failed to provide dozens of &#8216;pause letters&#8217; requested during litigation initiated by the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, according to Cointelegraph.
