Launched in 2023 with backing from Coinbase, the Base platform has rapidly gained popularity. Despite lacking a native token, the ecosystem outperforms many L2 solutions by TVL<\/span><\/a> and transaction activity<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Even so, the \u201csingle-layer\u201d Solana is well ahead on the above and many other metrics, despite a certain cooling of memecoin hype<\/a>, elevated inflation<\/a>, periodic outages<\/a> and mounting criticism<\/a>. Enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the Firedancer<\/a> upgrade, which promises to radically improve the network\u2019s performance and reliability.<\/p>\n

For their part, Base developers have implemented<\/a> Flashblocks on testnet, cutting block time from two seconds to 200 milliseconds. The team also unveiled two other tools \u2014 Appchains and Smart Wallet Sub Accounts \u2014 designed to make the system even more performant and user\u2011friendly.<\/p>\n

Flashblocks \u2014 a tenfold acceleration<\/h2>\n

The technology was developed jointly with Flashbots<\/a>, known for Ethereum tooling and MEV.<\/p>\n

Flashblocks boosts transaction processing by streaming pre\u2011confirmed blocks every 200 milliseconds. This reduces the risk of reversions. Earlier, Uniswap adopted the approach<\/a>, cutting block time on Unichain to 0.25 seconds.<\/p>\n

The architecture draws inspiration from state\u2011of\u2011the\u2011art block propagation and execution techniques \u2014 such as \u201cshreds\u201d in Solana<\/span><\/a> and \u201cdata squares\u201d in Celestia<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cAt the same time, new optimisations are being introduced in the context of rollups,\u201d \u2014 representatives of Base stressed.<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Specifically, Rollup Boost<\/a> \u2014 an addition to the Optimism stack \u2014 enables \u201cexternal block building\u201d.<\/p>\n

Their stated mission is to build a global onchain economy that catalyses innovation, creativity and freedom. The team says it will keep improving the network to make it more powerful, convenient and fast.<\/p>\n

Mainnet release is expected in the second quarter of 2025.<\/p>\n

Base appchains \u2014 a step towards scalable L3s<\/h2>\n

These are configurable blockchains built atop Base\u2019s \u201csecond floor\u201d using the OP Stack<\/a>. They function as layer\u2011three (L3) networks, providing dedicated blockspace to scale applications.<\/p>\n

The solutions support customisation \u2014 including bespoke gas tokens and fee logic \u2014 and target high\u2011load applications.<\/p>\n

In the team\u2019s view, appchains are a \u201cnatural evolution\u201d for resource\u2011intensive applications, making Base an even more powerful tool.<\/p>\n

The new components are built for scale and use op-enclave<\/a>, which enables instant state attestation via AWS S3 and AWS Nitro. Each appchain is backed by \u201centerprise\u2011grade infrastructure\u201d, including fully managed sequencers and nodes, plus observability and upgrades.<\/p>\n

Op\u2011enclave is a modification of the OP Stack<\/span> that uses AWS Nitro Enclaves as a trusted execution environment to immediately attest state and relay state roots to the base chain. This removes the seven\u2011day challenge period and enables instant withdrawals.<\/p>\n

Appchains are managed via the CDP<\/span> with developer\u2011oriented pricing, alongside Base tools such as Smart Wallet and CDP Paymaster.<\/p>\n
