According to Howells&#8217; comment to <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/uk-man-who-lost-bitcoin-landfill-loses-uk-appeal-case\">Cointelegraph<\/a>, he will claim violations by the UK&#8217;s High and Appeal Courts of his rights to property and a fair trial.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;The British community wants to sweep this under the rug, and I won&#8217;t let them. This won&#8217;t stop\u2014no matter how long it takes,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The ECHR cannot overturn a UK court decision, but a verdict in Howells&#8217; favor would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bihr.org.uk\/get-informed\/legislation-explainers\/the-relationship-between-the-human-rights-act-and-the-european-convention-on-human-rights\">require<\/a> previous courts to consider whether the interpretation of the country&#8217;s laws was compatible with the European Convention on Human Rights.<\/p>\n<p>In early January, the High Court also <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/british-man-seeks-to-buy-landfill-in-quest-to-recover-7500-btc\">rejected<\/a> the Briton&#8217;s claim, citing a lack of &#8220;realistic prospects&#8221; of success in his case.<\/p>\n<p>Howells&#8217; hard drive, containing the keys to his Bitcoin wallet, was mistakenly thrown into a trash bin in 2013 and subsequently taken to the Newport Docksway landfill. Since then, he has made numerous attempts to retrieve the device, offering money to authorities and proposing searches using X-ray scanning and Boston Dynamics&#8217; robotic dogs.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025\u20132026, UK authorities plan to close the Newport landfill.
