The downtrend from Sunday, 6 April, continued. On Monday morning the price <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-tumbles-below-75000\">slipped below<\/a> the $75,000 level.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over 24 hours the price of the \u201cdigital gold\u201d fell by almost 10%. XRP lost about 21%, Dogecoin roughly 19%. Ethereum failed to hold $1,500, dropping by ~18%. The total crypto market capitalisation fell by ~12.5% to $2.46trn. Bitcoin\u2019s dominance topped 60%.<\/p>\n<p>Soon the price recovered to $80,000 amid rumours that U.S. President Donald Trump planned a 90\u2011day pause before implementing tariffs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On 7 April, coins sold at a loss on exchanges <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/investors-sold-36000-btc-at-a-loss-as-bitcoin-fell-through-75000\">came to<\/a> 36,000 BTC (over $2.7bn).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In the past 24 hours, 36K BTC were sold at a loss on exchanges \u2014 that&#8217;s not a lot compared to other days this year. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/L73nDYVNlp\">pic.twitter.com\/L73nDYVNlp<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Axel ?? Adler Jr (@AxelAdlerJr) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AxelAdlerJr\/status\/1909215432063492587?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 7, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Overnight on 9 April the price of the first cryptocurrency touched a year\u2011to\u2011date low \u2014 below $75,000. The catalyst was the entry into force of Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/trump-declares-liberation-day-with-new-tariffs\">\u201cliberating\u201d tariffs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Washington imposed tariffs of 10% and above on foreign goods. For China the rate reached 104% after Beijing refused to \u201cmake a deal\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ethereum briefly fell to its lowest since March 2023 \u2014 below $1,400. The ETH\/BTC rate sank to 0.01855, a level last seen in December 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Pav Hundal, lead analyst at Swyftx, estimated the crypto market\u2019s decline since early February at $1.2trn.<\/p>\n<p>Later the same day the price recovered to $78,000, but as a U.S. response Beijing <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-retreats-to-76000-following-chinas-response-to-us-tariffs\">raised<\/a> tariffs on American goods from 34% to 84%. Bitcoin slipped back to $76,000.<\/p>\n<p>By 10 April the price had <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-surges-past-81000-amid-trumps-tariff-pause\">jumped<\/a> above $81,000 after the U.S. president said tariffs would be temporarily reduced for a number of countries while rates on Chinese imports would rise. The S&amp;P 500 and NASDAQ gained 9.52% and 12.16%, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The release of U.S. consumer price index data <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/us-inflation-slows-bitcoin-shows-tepid-reaction\">prompted<\/a> a brief spike in bitcoin to $82,500. Quotes then slipped to $81,000, trimming the 24\u2011hour gain to 4.3%.<\/p>\n<p>On 11\u201312 April bitcoin extended its uptrend. After the announcement that semiconductors and a number of tech goods would be exempt from the \u201creciprocal tariffs\u201d, the price <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-tests-85000-amid-easing-of-semiconductor-tariffs\">topped<\/a> $85,500 \u2014 a local high for the period the new tariffs have been in place.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-qw.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXcp7CGC7HsDMoa2TQ97z9n_RakZyPNHQb156R00lF8feyL3tAtzTSgfEKwO5tweHuI3nAu4rUipICFEGcfPWgcj28nyjNZC4pATdp-lvJFR2b3VqMSXBAnREZCwcbtTUS6gL9Kg2A?key=gtLjTyRQ5jNpn_lKnbIw39ra\" alt=\"Weekly round-up: new SEC chief, DOJ crypto unit shuttered and miner import premiums\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hourly BTC\/USD chart on Binance. Data: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/chart\/?symbol=BINANCE%3AETHUSD\">TradingView<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the time of writing the price is about $1,600, up 6.7% on the week.<\/p>\n<p>Over seven days, all other top\u201110 assets by market capitalisation also rose.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-qw.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXdJfKhE_GsJICPPdiiOzlUdDbE3FTr5y62oXkLYV8HlzEhZNCbi7A-2FembNAL-fDRttnK93V-pEIzn36pGEjWhyr-9EerunYU2Y7FZa0t3mChlgPAS8zBm68LsCS9elOUS7ezR7Q?key=gtLjTyRQ5jNpn_lKnbIw39ra\" alt=\"Weekly round-up: new SEC chief, DOJ crypto unit shuttered and miner import premiums\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Data: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coingecko.com\/\">CoinGecko<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The biggest gains came from SOL (12.6%), TRX (5.4%) and XRP (4.3%).<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paul Atkins confirmed as SEC chair<\/h2>\n<p>On 9 April the U.S. Senate <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/paul-atkins-confirmed-as-sec-chairman-by-senate\">voted<\/a> to confirm Paul Atkins as chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty\u2011two senators backed the appointment, 44 voted against, and four did not take part.<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/trump-nominates-paul-atkins-as-sec-chair\">nominated<\/a> Atkins to lead the SEC in December 2024. Many in the crypto industry deemed him a good fit given his sector experience.<\/p>\n<p>Atkins served as an SEC commissioner from 2002 to 2008, then founded the consultancy Patomak Global Partners, whose clients have included crypto exchanges and DeFi projects.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of March his candidacy cleared the Senate Banking Committee. Ahead of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7AyzxTQZg0E&#038;t=2s\">hearings<\/a>, journalists learned the prospective regulator chief <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/potential-sec-chairs-crypto-investments-unveiled\">owns<\/a> stakes in three crypto firms: Securitize, Anchorage Digital and Off the Chain Capital.<\/p>\n<p>During the debate some Democratic senators criticised Atkins over links to the collapsed exchange FTX.<\/p>\n<p>Republican senator Tim Scott said at the hearing he hoped that under Atkins \u201cthe SEC will return to its core mission and ensure that our markets remain the envy of the world\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Former chair Gary Gensler <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/gary-genslers-departure-a-retrospective-on-the-sec-chairs-tenure\">resigned<\/a> on 20 January and <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/gary-gensler-returns-to-mit-as-professor-after-leaving-sec\">returned<\/a> as a professor at MIT\u2019s Sloan School of Management.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">U.S. Justice Department disbanded its crypto-crime unit<\/h2>\n<p>Media reported that the Department of Justice shut the National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team (NCET).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The decision was taken to implement <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/trump-to-designate-cryptocurrency-a-national-priority-reports-say\">an executive order by President Donald Trump<\/a> aimed at streamlining digital\u2011asset regulation.<\/p>\n<p>NCET was created in 2021 under the Joe Biden administration. The unit handled major crypto investigations, including the case against the mixer <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/tornado-cash-removed-from-ofac-sanctions-list\">Tornado Cash<\/a> and the hack of <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/jury-finds-mango-markets-attacker-guilty\">Mango Markets<\/a>. It also pursued cases involving theft of digital assets by North Korean hackers.<\/p>\n<p>Under the new directive, DOJ staff will no longer pursue crypto exchanges, mixers and offline wallets. Instead, prosecutors will focus on fraudsters using digital assets and those who cause real harm to investors.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. senators <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/senators-criticize-closure-of-cryptocurrency-crime-task-force-as-a-grave-mistake\">called<\/a> the decision to abolish the unit \u201ca gross mistake\u201d. A group of politicians, including Elizabeth Warren, Richard Durbin, Mazie Hirono, Sheldon Whitehouse, Christopher Coons and Richard Blumenthal, sent a letter to Attorney General Todd Blanche.<\/p>\n<p>In their view, this creates \u201ca systemic vulnerability in the digital asset sector\u201d that \u201cdrug traffickers, terrorists, fraudsters and adversaries\u201d will exploit at scale. Mixers are the main tool for this category of actors, the lawmakers said.<\/p>\n<p>The letter also mentions cryptocurrency projects of U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s family, suggesting a \u201cpotential link\u201d between them and the department\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n<p>The senators demanded a briefing explaining the DOJ\u2019s decisions by 1 May.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to discuss with friends?<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A trader <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/trader-locks-0-05-in-solana-staking-until-5138-whats-the-purpose\">locked<\/a> $0.05 in Solana staking until the year 5138. To what end?<\/li>\n<li>A Bloomberg analyst <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bloomberg-analyst-foresees-bitcoin-plunge-to-10000\">predicted<\/a> bitcoin would fall to $10,000.<\/li>\n<li>In the U.S., authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/us-demands-disclosure-of-bitcoin-creators-identity\">demanded<\/a> disclosure of information about bitcoin\u2019s creator.<\/li>\n<li>An NFT collector <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/nft-collector-sells-rare-cryptopunk-at-a-10-million-loss\">sold<\/a> a rare CryptoPunk at a $10m loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">U.S. states advanced bitcoin initiatives<\/h2>\n<p>Authorities in several U.S. states <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-initiatives-emerge-across-several-u-s-states\">put forward<\/a> their own initiatives to integrate bitcoin into the financial system.<\/p>\n<p>The North Carolina House of Representatives introduced a bill that would allow cryptocurrencies to be used for transactions such as paying taxes.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cDigital assets are recognised as a valid medium of exchange in North Carolina. A transaction may not be declined or its legal effect challenged solely because it uses cryptocurrencies,\u201d the document says.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Digital Asset Freedom Act sets out criteria digital assets must meet to be recognised as such:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>market capitalisation of at least $750bn;<\/li>\n<li>daily trading volume above $10bn;<\/li>\n<li>trading on the open market for at least ten years;<\/li>\n<li>proven security and resistance to censorship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The document places particular emphasis on decentralisation: digital assets must be launched fairly, without premine, insider distributions or control by centralised entities, and must not depend on a single actor or a small group of interested parties for operation and governance.<\/p>\n<p>No specific examples of cryptocurrencies meeting the standards are given.<\/p>\n<p>On 10 April the New Hampshire House of Representatives approved, by 192 \u201cfor\u201d and 179 \u201cagainst\u201d, a bill to establish a state bitcoin reserve (SBR).<\/p>\n<p>If approved by the Senate and the governor, the bill would allow the treasurer to allocate up to 5% of the general fund and other permitted funds to invest in precious metals and certain digital assets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The bill also sets out custody procedures.<\/p>\n<p>As of end\u20112024, the general fund\u2019s <span data-descr=\"assets under management\" class=\"old_tooltip\">AUM<\/span> in New Hampshire stood at $3.6bn.<\/p>\n<p>The bill specifies that funds may be invested only in cryptocurrencies with a market capitalisation above $500bn. The measure must clear three committees before it reaches the state House floor.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Also on ForkLog:<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bubblemaps: the MELANIA team <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bubblemaps-melania-team-withdraws-30-million-from-community-funds-and-sells-quietly\">withdrew<\/a> $30m from community funds and \u201cis quietly selling\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Hackers <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/hackers-exploit-microsoft-office-extensions-to-target-crypto-investors\">attacked<\/a> crypto investors via infected Microsoft Office extensions.<\/li>\n<li>A former colleague of Virgil Griffith <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/virgil-griffith-released-from-prison-former-colleague-reports\">reported<\/a> his release.<\/li>\n<li>Charles Hoskinson urged the industry to prepare for Big Tech\u2019s invasion of Web3.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Miners overpaid to import equipment into the U.S.<\/h2>\n<p>As 9 April neared, large U.S. bitcoin miners <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-miners-pay-millions-to-beat-trumps-tariffs\">chartered<\/a> Southeast Asian cargo flights at $2\u20133.5m \u2014 two to four times normal rates.<\/p>\n<p>Miners were racing to import ordered ASIC rigs before U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cliberating\u201d tariffs took effect. The rush centred on getting equipment out, and factories worked overtime to fulfil as many orders as possible.<\/p>\n<p>On 2 April Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/trump-declares-liberation-day-with-new-tariffs\">announced<\/a> new tariffs for trading partners. A minimum 10% for all countries took effect on 5 April.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From 9 April, \u201creciprocal tariffs\u201d were introduced for a number of U.S. partners. In particular, rates were raised for: Malaysia (24%), Thailand (36%), Indonesia (32%), Taiwan (32%), while for China the rate ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-retreats-to-76000-following-chinas-response-to-us-tariffs\">came to 104%<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first three jurisdictions host assembly plants for major miner manufacturers: Bitmain, MicroBT, Canaan, Bitdeer and Auradine. Taiwan\u2019s TSMC supplies most of the chips underpinning the rigs.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, MicroBT opened miner production in the U.S. Bitmain <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitmain-to-establish-bitcoin-miner-production-in-the-us\">made<\/a> a similar move in January this year. However, these facilities cover only a small share of required volumes.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024 U.S. miners imported equipment worth over $2.3bn. In Q1 alone the figure exceeded $860m. The country accounts for 35\u201340% of bitcoin\u2019s hashrate.<\/p>\n<p>Experts estimate tariffs will lift ASIC\u2011miner prices by 22\u201336%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/data.hashrateindex.com\/asic-index-data\/price-index\">Hashrate Index<\/a>, over the past 12 months the cost of rigs with an energy\u2011efficiency ratio up to 19 J\/TH has fallen.
