The driver was US President Donald Trump\u2019s promises to enact \u201cthe biggest tax cut\u201d and strike a \u201cmajor trade deal\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin\u2019s realised capitalisation <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoins-realised-capitalisation-hits-a-record-high-a-sign-of-a-new-bull-run\">reached<\/a> a record $890.74bn, signalling potential for further gains.<\/p>\n<p>During the day bitcoin again <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-surges-past-100000-amid-market-revival\">cleared<\/a> $100,000\u2014the level seen in early February. The impulsive rise came with a surge in trading volumes.<\/p>\n<p>On 9 May the price hit $103,700 before momentum faded. In the small hours of 11 May it notched a local high above $104,600.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of writing bitcoin trades at $103,784, up 8.2% on the week.<\/p>\n<p>For Ethereum the week began around $1,800. In a day the price <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ethereum-outpaces-bitcoin-in-daily-growth-surge\">rose<\/a> 18.8% to above $2,300.<\/p>\n<p>Ethereum outpaced bitcoin and other major cryptoassets on the day. The trader known as Daan Crypto Trades <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DaanCrypto\/status\/1920583388269797535\">called<\/a> the asset\u2019s daily candle \u201cabsolutely insane\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Nick Foster, founder of the Derive protocol, said the move was driven by several factors, not just Pectra. The upgrade contains 11 key EIPs. One notable change is adding smart\u2011contract functionality to wallets, simplifying their use and recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Rolling out the hard fork on the Sepolia (consensus layer) and Holesky (execution layer) testnets led to <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ethereums-sepolia-testnet-faces-glitch-post-pectra-activation\">disruptions<\/a>. In the former case, additional complications arose from <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ethereum-developers-uncover-interference-in-pectra-deployment-on-sepolia\">a malicious actor\u2019s interference<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In Holesky, even after <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ethereum-testnet-holesky-resumes-after-pectra-update-glitch\">restoration of functionality<\/a>, it proved impossible to test the upgrade\u2019s validator\u2011exit features.<\/p>\n<p>Developers decided to create a new long\u2011term testnet to complete validation of the hard fork. The network, named Hoodi, was <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ethereum-developers-to-launch-new-testnet-hoodi-for-pectra-verification\">launched on 17 March<\/a> and the update was <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ethereum-testnet-hoodi-activates-pectra-hard-fork\">deployed<\/a> there the same month.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Ethereum team, the main features implemented are active on mainnet, including:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>smart\u2011contract wallets;<\/li>\n<li>doubling data\u2011storage capacity for L2 scaling;<\/li>\n<li>validator user\u2011experience improvements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The next Ethereum hard fork, Fusaka, is <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ethereums-fusaka-hard-fork-scheduled-for-late-2025\">scheduled<\/a> for the second half of the year (September\u2013October). Developers have already excluded changes to the EVM codebase to implement the Ethereum Object Format.<\/p>\n<p>One reason for dropping the option was Vitalik Buterin\u2019s proposal to move Ethereum\u2019s virtual machine <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/vitalik-buterin-proposes-shifting-ethereums-architecture-to-risc-v\">to a new architecture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trump\u2019s crypto forays meet resistance<\/h2>\n<p>Democratic senator Chris Murphy proposed a bill that would bar US federal officials, including Trump, from promoting meme\u2011coins for personal gain.<\/p>\n<p>The document, dubbed the MEME Act, seeks to prevent the use of public office to enrich oneself via digital assets or securities.<\/p>\n<p>The trigger was TRUMP, launched ahead of Trump\u2019s inauguration on the Solana blockchain. Murphy called the token \u201can example of corruption\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cTrump turned the crypto market into a personal Venmo account where foreign oligarchs transfer millions for political favours.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Democratic senator Richard Blumenthal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsgac.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025-05-06-Letter-from-Sen.-Richard-Blumenthal-to-Fight-Fight-Fight.pdf\">sent<\/a> requests to World Liberty Financial (WLF) and Fight Fight Fight LLC seeking details of Trump\u2019s involvement. He said the Senate investigations committee is opening a probe into potential conflicts of interest and breaches of law.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to Fight Fight Fight LLC, issuer of TRUMP, Blumenthal pointed to sharp price swings and suggested a small circle profited from the launch. He also criticised the <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/trump-hosts-gala-dinner-for-top-trump-meme-coin-holders\">dinner with Trump<\/a>: in his view, the event was staged to spur token sales after interest waned.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cTrump\u2019s ties to the TRUMP token and attempts to use the White House to increase its value are an unprecedented pay\u2011to\u2011play scheme,\u201d the senator said.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In his letter to WLF, Blumenthal said the Trump family had obtained \u201csignificant financial benefit\u201d from the project, and that collaboration with foreign investors poses a national\u2011security risk.<\/p>\n<p>The companies must provide documents on ownership structure, financial flows and measures to prevent conflicts of interest by 27 July.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, Democrats <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallego.senate.gov\/press-releases\/gallego-colleagues-issue-statement-on-genius-act\/\">said<\/a> they would not support the stablecoin bill (the <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/david-sacks-prioritizes-bitcoin-reserve-assessment\">GENIUS Act<\/a>) unless it added tough anti\u2011money\u2011laundering rules and restrictions on foreign issuers.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cTrump launched his own <\/em><em>stablecoin<\/em><em> \u2014 that is unacceptable. We worked for three years on regulation, and now we are being rushed while key risks are ignored,\u201d said Maxine Waters, vice\u2011chair of the House Financial Services Committee.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The reference is to the stablecoin <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/world-liberty-financial-to-conduct-usd1-stablecoin-airdrop\">USD1<\/a>, launched by the DeFi project of the <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/trump-family-secures-control-over-world-liberty-financial\">Trump family<\/a>, World Liberty Financial (WLF).<\/p>\n<p>On 8 May the GENIUS Act <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/stablecoin-bill-stumbles-in-key-us-senate-vote\">failed<\/a> a vote in the Senate. The odds of passage have fallen sharply.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats had previously intended to approve the GENIUS Act. A week earlier, a revised version appeared, which many did not have time to study. Sales reached the highest level since October 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Riot Platforms and CleanSpark formally abandoned a policy of retaining 100% of mined coins. Most indicators are on the cusp and offer no clear signals, he explained.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, Ju stressed that a wrong forecast does not mean on\u2011chain metrics have lost their value.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cData remain data.
