It requires companies with revenue over $1 billion to pay 15% on profits calculated according to <span data-descr=\"generally accepted accounting principles\" class=\"old_tooltip\">GAAP<\/span> standards, rather than traditional tax norms.<\/p>\n<p>The problem arose after the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) updated its rules in December 2023: companies must now assess digital assets at market value, even if unsold. This automatically increases the tax base.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8220;Neither Congress nor the FASB intended this outcome. It is a side effect of tying taxes to the standards of a private organization,&#8221; the senators noted.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>They warned that companies are forced to sell assets to pay taxes, while foreign competitors are free from such obligations.<\/p>\n<p>Lummis and Moreno demanded the Treasury urgently issue temporary guidelines excluding unrealized gains from calculations.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8220;Without changes, the US will lose its leadership in digital finance,&#8221; Lummis stated.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The senator is also promoting the <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/cynthia-lummis-unveils-revised-bitcoin-reserve-legislation\">BITCOIN Act<\/a>, which would allow the government to hold over 1 million bitcoins as part of a newly established <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/trump-establishes-u-s-strategic-bitcoin-reserve\">crypto reserve<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Back in March, the US House of Representatives <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/us-house-overturns-irs-rule-on-defi-data-collection\">voted to repeal<\/a> an <span data-descr=\"Internal Revenue Service\" class=\"old_tooltip\">IRS<\/span> rule requiring DeFi platforms to collect and provide user data.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US Senators Cynthia Lummis and Bernie Moreno have called on the Treasury to exclude unrealized cryptocurrency gains from corporate tax calculations.
