The head of OpenAI is the third-largest shareholder after Advance and Tencent.<\/p>\n<p>Reddit is the first among tech giants to legally challenge AI developers over the training of neural networks. Similar legal disputes have occurred previously.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2023\/dec\/27\/new-york-times-openai-microsoft-lawsuit?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">filed a lawsuit<\/a> against OpenAI and Microsoft for setting up AI models based on its articles without payment or permission. A similar suit against Meta was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/7\/9\/23788741\/sarah-silverman-openai-meta-chatgpt-llama-copyright-infringement-chatbots-artificial-intelligence-ai?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">filed<\/a> by writers Sarah Silverman, Christopher Golden, and Richard Kadrey, claiming the company used their books to train a language model, infringing copyright.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2024, eight daily newspapers owned by Alden Global Capital <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/us-newspapers-sue-openai-and-microsoft-over-copyright-infringement-in-ai-training\">filed a lawsuit<\/a> against OpenAI and Microsoft. They accused them of illegally using &#8220;millions of articles&#8221; to train AI products without permission.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;We will not tolerate profit-driven companies like Anthropic commercially exploiting Reddit content for billions in revenue without giving anything back to platform users and respecting their privacy,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/06\/04\/reddit-sues-anthropic-for-allegedly-not-paying-for-training-data\/\">stated<\/a> Reddit&#8217;s chief legal officer Ben Lee.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Notably, Reddit has struck deals with other AI model providers, including <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/reddit-shares-surge-12-following-openai-partnership\">OpenAI<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/reddit-secures-60-million-ai-content-licensing-deal\">Google<\/a>. They are permitted to train neural networks on the platform&#8217;s data. It is claimed that the agreement ensures the protection of user interests and privacy.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;We disagree with Reddit&#8217;s claims and will vigorously defend ourselves,&#8221; commented Anthropic representative Daniel Giglieri.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In April 2023, it was revealed that Reddit aimed to start charging for access to its <span data-descr=\"application programming interface\" class=\"old_tooltip\">API<\/span> from companies using it to collect data for training large language models.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/telegram.org\/js\/telegram-widget.js?22\" data-telegram-post=\"forklogAI\/3991\" data-width=\"100%\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Reddit demands compensation from Anthropic for the damages incurred and reimbursement for the amount the startup gained by using the platform&#8217;s content. The company also seeks a court order to prohibit further use of the information.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, Anthropic <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/claude-chatbot-launches-its-own-blog\">started a blog<\/a> for its chatbot Claude.
