Data: Glassnode, Gemini.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAs adoption has broadened, particularly among sovereign and regulated financial organisations, annualised realised volatility across all time frames \u2014 from weekly to yearly \u2014 has steadily declined since 2018,\u201d the document says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On these metrics, the analysts foresee \u201cmore resilient and orderly rallies\u201d in digital assets, rather than the abrupt spikes seen previously.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who holds the reserves<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to the report, 30% of bitcoin\u2019s issuance (~6.14m BTC worth $661bn at the time of writing) sits with 216 entities. They include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>centralised exchanges; <\/li>\n<li>ETFs and crypto funds;<\/li>\n<li>public companies;<\/li>\n<li>private companies;<\/li>\n<li>DeFi and smart contracts;<\/li>\n<li>governments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Entity-Count.webp\" alt=\"Entity-Count\" class=\"wp-image-260356\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Entity classification and coins held by each group. Data: Glassnode, Gemini.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Their wallets show infrequent movement and weak correlation with bitcoin\u2019s cycles, yet hold enough to sway markets when coins are sold or shifted, the experts noted.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis trend is especially evident in the government treasuries of the United States, China, Germany and the United Kingdom, where most coins are acquired through law-enforcement actions rather than market participation,\u201d the analysts said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The United States remains the largest state holder with a balance of ~200,000 BTC. Two seizures account for most of it:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>69,369 BTC from the Silk Road case, seized in November 2020;<\/li>\n<li>94,643 BTC seized in relation to <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/us-authorities-transfer-922-million-in-seized-bitfinex-hack-bitcoins\">the Bitfinex case<\/a> in February 2022.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These coins have now been designated the basis of the US strategic bitcoin reserve under an <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/trump-to-announce-significant-changes-in-cryptocurrency-regulation\">executive order<\/a> by President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers also observe that the United Kingdom has been accumulating bitcoin via the National Crime Agency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/US-UK-Germany-Government-Balance.webp\" alt=\"US-UK-Germany-Government-Balance\" class=\"wp-image-260359\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bitcoin balances of the US, UK and Germany.
