This marks a 252% increase from June, when the figure was $2.3 billion, reports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblock.co\/post\/365230\/solana-cme-futures-volume-open-interest-triple-in-july-etf-momentum-builds\">The Block<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"420\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theblock.co\/data\/crypto-markets\/futures\/volume-and-oi-of-cme-solana-futures\/embed\" title=\"Volume and OI of CME Solana futures\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Open interest (OI) in SOL contracts rose by 203% \u2014 from $132.3 million in June to $400.9 million in July.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CME launched Solana futures in March of this year. The exchange introduced the new instruments in two variants:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>micro contracts \u2014 based on 25 SOL;<\/li>\n<li>larger contracts \u2014 on 500 SOL.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is driving the growth?\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Initially, Solana futures attracted little attention: by the end of March, trading volume was $12.3 million, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/k33.com\/research\/articles\/stabilizing-flow-stabilizing-market\">K33 Research<\/a>. However, activity surged in July, driven by interest in potential ETFs based on the altcoin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cA step closer to a Solana exchange-traded fund,\u201d noted VanEck&#8217;s head of digital asset research, Matthew Sigel, when CME announced the launch of SOL futures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On July 31, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/2028541\/000162828025036988\/vanecksolanaetfs-1a2.htm\">VanEck<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/2063380\/000119312525170603\/d941170ds1a.htm\">Fidelity<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/2057388\/000206159025000143\/s1a.htm\">Franklin Templeton<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/1896677\/000095017025100875\/gsol_s-1_amendment_2.htm\">Grayscale<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/2073298\/000199937125010393\/solana-s1a_073125.htm\">CoinShares<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/2041869\/000199937125010396\/canary-s1a_73125.htm\">Canary<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/2045872\/000121390025070066\/ea0250781-s1a2_bitwise.htm\">Bitwise<\/a> filed updated S-1 forms with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Asset managers did the same before the regulator approved the launch of Bitcoin and Ethereum-based exchange-traded funds, thus bolstering investor optimism about the emergence of a Solana ETF.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In July, trading also <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/solana-staking-etf-debuts-with-12-million-inflow\">began<\/a> for shares of the REX-Osprey SOL + Staking ETF (SSK). It operates under the 1940 Act, unlike standard crypto ETFs, but directly invests in Solana, staking at least 50% of its assets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe listing of such an ETF increases activity in the futures market, as market makers use derivatives to hedge their positions,\u201d explained Presto&#8217;s head of research, Peter Chan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BTC and ETH Futures Continue to Dominate\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Despite record figures, Solana futures still significantly lag behind CME&#8217;s comparable products for Bitcoin and Ethereum.<\/p>\n<p>In July, the total volume of contracts based on digital gold rose by 23% to $275.3 billion. Meanwhile, the average OI increased by 8.5% to $17.8 billion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"420\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theblock.co\/data\/crypto-markets\/futures\/average-daily-volume-of-cme-bitcoin-futures-monthly\/embed\" title=\"Volume and OI of CME Bitcoin futures\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>During the same period, trading volume for Ethereum futures jumped by 82% to $118.1 billion. The average OI reached $5.2 billion, showing a 75% increase.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"420\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theblock.co\/data\/crypto-markets\/futures\/average-daily-volume-of-cme-ethereum-futures-monthly\/embed\" title=\"Volume and OI of CME Ethereum futures\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Back in June, on the 4th, the Moscow Exchange <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/moscow-exchange-launches-bitcoin-futures-trading\">launched<\/a> trading in futures on shares of the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF by BlackRock.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In July, the trading volume of Solana futures on the CME Group exchange reached $8.1 billion.
