From Tuesday to Wednesday bitcoin traded in a $118,000\u2013$120,000 range.<\/p>\n<p>Overnight on August 14, digital gold set a new all-time high above $124,000, but almost immediately corrected, dropping to $117,000.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-qw.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXfUUuUN1XtC1OmFwrQhDIzYF2DZ2OgHWDOi4qHlU5Wzb0fBdp46XAnzOZDwi79ZLLp0_HKxMtH_Hi6ZJ7dz2TXqveQA-4m8KO6KFRMgrxBGFW6tDtTkzFKg63TRz3XYwwYNssmCjg?key=xCTb3Yav8rnsfeAg40j0EQ\" alt=\"Week in review: crypto\u2019s rollercoaster and a 51% attack on Monero\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hourly chart, BTC\/USDT on Binance. Including the pullback, it rose 7.4% on the week.<\/p>\n<p>In parallel, Solana <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/solana-surpasses-205-amid-market-surge\">topped<\/a> $205. It now trades just below that psychological level, up 6.7% over seven days.<\/p>\n<p>Total crypto market capitalisation holds a touch above $4trn. On August 12 the mining pool <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/qubic-mining-pool-seizes-control-of-monero\">seized<\/a> a majority of the network\u2019s hashrate.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-qw.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXe2IgKCAx6JCvtyJVAZ1404mn_m-nW-Ox-jefZy5D4jhxhXIWvB--9-iDUnkBw-IH6PhFi5x2B33eI4124TdJdEJZVDcFRecn8WomBnl7UE6zG_rWNeBioBEHj73GxAnyoM3TJ0?key=xCTb3Yav8rnsfeAg40j0EQ\" alt=\"Week in review: crypto\u2019s rollercoaster and a 51% attack on Monero\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/evilcos\/status\/1955199116499370392\">X<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The initiators pulled off a large block reorganisation. Control allowed Qubic to rewrite transaction history, conduct double spends and censor operations.<\/p>\n<p>Ledger\u2019s CTO, Charles Guillemet, put the daily cost of sustaining such an attack at $75m.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of writing Qubic still controls a considerable share of Monero\u2019s hashrate, though the figure has fallen to 32.3%. In his view, it looked more like a PR exercise for Qubic.<\/p>\n<p>The platform markedly boosted its profile and token price, while Monero\u2019s network suffered no material losses, the expert noted.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201c51% is a theoretical figure on paper. To block blocks you need at least 75\u201380% of the hashrate, and to censor transactions more than 90%. A double-spend attack is even harder: beyond massive hashrate, the attacker needs substantial funds in XMR and a victim who can be deceived. That is already over the line into criminality and technically dozens of times harder,\u201d the Hyperfusion co-founder explained.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Monero nevertheless took reputational damage. At current prices our bitcoin reserve is worth $15bn\u2013$20bn,\u201d Bessent noted.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He later clarified that the Treasury is studying budget\u2011neutral ways to acquire bitcoin to expand the holdings.<\/p>\n<p>The remarks coincided with producer\u2011price data showing a 3.3% year\u2011on\u2011year rise\u2014the highest since February\u2014also pressuring markets.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Attack on a Turkish exchange<\/h2>\n<p>On August 14 one of Turkey\u2019s largest crypto exchanges, BtcTurk, <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/btcturk-halts-withdrawals-amid-suspicious-48-million-transactions\">suspended<\/a> withdrawals and deposits after detecting suspicious activity.<\/p>\n<p>Security researchers tracked a large outflow of crypto assets from the platform\u2019s hot wallets. The company said the majority of assets are safe. Trading and lira operations remained open.<\/p>\n<p>BtcTurk was already <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/hackers-breach-turkish-exchange-btcturk-causing-54-million-loss\">hacked<\/a> in June 2024, with losses of about $54m. Of that, $5.3m was frozen thanks to Binance.<\/p>\n<p>Another victim last week was Odin.fun, a memecoin platform on the bitcoin network, which <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/hackers-extract-7-million-in-bitcoin-from-odin-fun-platform\">lost<\/a> 58.2 BTC (~$7m). The community suggested the attackers used a collateral\u2011manipulation exploit.<\/p>\n<p>Co\u2011founder Bob Bodily confirmed the breach and warned the treasury does not have enough funds to cover users\u2019 losses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also on ForkLog:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>S&#038;P Global Ratings <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/sp-global-ratings-assigns-first-ever-rating-to-defi-protocol\">rated<\/a> a DeFi protocol for the first time.<\/li>\n<li>Nvidia <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/nvidia-unveils-ai-solutions-suite-for-robotics\">unveiled<\/a> an AI toolkit for robots.<\/li>\n<li>In Kazakhstan, trading <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/kazakhstan-launches-central-asias-first-bitcoin-etf\">began<\/a> in Central Asia\u2019s first bitcoin ETF.<\/li>\n<li>GoMining <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/gomining-predicts-renewed-bitcoin-mining-hype\">forecast<\/a> a new hype cycle around bitcoin mining.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Legal affairs<\/h2>\n<p>Two well\u2011known crypto figures appeared before American courts\u2014on opposite sides.<\/p>\n<p>On August 12 Terraform Labs co\u2011founder Do Kwon <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/do-kwon-admits-to-fraud-charges\">pleaded<\/a> guilty to criminal charges of fraud and conspiracy, apologising for his actions.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI made false and misleading statements. I did not disclose the role of a trading firm in restoring the peg. What I did was wrong,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Kwon waived his right to a jury trial and confirmed to the court that he understands he faces up to 25 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>He struck a plea deal with Manhattan prosecutors, and the government agreed to seek no more than 12 years provided he accepts responsibility. Judge Paul Engelmayer noted he could still impose a longer sentence, as he is not bound by the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>It also <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/justin-sun-sues-bloomberg-over-asset-disclosure\">emerged<\/a> that TRON founder Justin Sun filed a lawsuit in Delaware federal court against Bloomberg, accusing the media company of planning to breach an agreement and reveal details of his assets.<\/p>\n<p>In February the entrepreneur\u2019s team was offered inclusion in the ranking of the world\u2019s 500 richest people. Sun hesitated, but agreed after assurances that files with crypto\u2011wallet addresses \u201cwould not leave the office\u201d and would be accessible only to a small circle at Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p>He now claims the newsroom plans to publish the data soon.
