Where possible, refunds will be made in cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe will ask all account holders to register their claims and we will begin the process of verifying their identities after the release,\u201d said Grant Thornton.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Representatives urged Cryptopia users not to trust third parties. The channels for publishing reliable information were named by Grant Thornton as its website, the firm&#8217;s accounts, and the exchange&#8217;s Facebook and Twitter pages.<\/p>\n<p>The report also notes that due to an error by a Christchurch High Court officer, data belonging to some users ended up with an \u201cunauthorised third party.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe are concerned that the third party may attempt to use this information to mislead and influence account holders\u2019 decisions. We have taken steps to prevent this,\u201d the firm stressed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In January 2019 the New Zealand exchange Cryptopia reported \u201csubstantial losses\u201d due to a hacking attack. By various estimates, the attackers stole assets worth about $16 million (at the time of the incident).<\/p>\n<p>After the exchange began liquidation, Grant Thornton uncovered outstanding debts of $2.7 million.
