Although there are no hard deadlines or a strict order of upgrades, the community embraced a proposal by Vitalik Buterin, founder of the world\u2019s second\u2011largest cryptocurrency, published in November 2022.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Updated roadmap diagram! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/MT9BKgYcJH\">pic.twitter.com\/MT9BKgYcJH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 vitalik.eth (@VitalikButerin) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VitalikButerin\/status\/1588669782471368704?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 4, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The plan lays out six tracks named by the ecosystem\u2019s co\u2011founder: The Merge, The Surge, The Scourge, The Verge, The Purge and The Splurge.<\/p>\n<p>He has said the roadmap <a href=\"https:\/\/forkast.news\/headlines\/vitalik-ethereum-55-complete-post-merge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">is not<\/a> a strict sequence of upgrades. Pieces from different tracks are implemented in parallel, advancing goals across blocks at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>In simplified form, priorities for Ethereum\u2019s sustainable development include <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-layer%e2%80%912-solution-in-blockchain\">L2<\/a> scaling, stronger wallet security and data privacy. That is the direction Buterin outlined in June 2023.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-text-wrappers-cards single_card\">\n<h2 class=\"card_label\">What does The Merge change?<\/h2>\n<p>The best\u2011known track on the roadmap is The Merge, which ended mining and introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/proof-of-stake-how-it-works-and-why-it-is-so-popular\">Proof-of-Stake<\/a> (PoS). By September 2023, the ETH community had marked one year since the move to PoS.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/yakdejwJWcXUQTozlxK0idlea7yMfxK952i3_hwH4lxIjbjT7EpOMWUwniCNDX0kD2eRSVoB5juFSdv6zV_KACT20xRqhMt0289WshgWYDirloEgb1aCtPXjOMncoY22H2bQglI0U3uNp5arXQfHQ4s\" alt=\"\u0427\u0442\u043e \u0432\u0445\u043e\u0434\u0438\u0442 \u0432 \u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0436\u043d\u0443\u044e \u043a\u0430\u0440\u0442\u0443 Ethereum?\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The aim of The Merge is a simple, robust and decentralised PoS consensus.<\/p>\n<p>The September 2022 transition to PoS did not complete this track. In April 2023 the network executed the Shapella hard fork, enabling ETH withdrawals from staking. The upgrade also reduced gas costs for certain transaction types, optimised on\u2011chain data storage, and introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-the-ethereum-virtual-machine-evm\">EVM<\/a> improvements and new cryptographic primitives.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-text-wrappers-cards single_card\">\n<h2 class=\"card_label\">What does The Surge include?<\/h2>\n<p>This track targets Ethereum\u2019s scaling via <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-are-rollups-and-how-do-they-scale-ethereum\">rollups<\/a>, better known as L2 solutions. Notable projects on ETH include <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-are-starknets-blockchain-and-cryptocurrency\">StarkNet<\/a>, zkSync, Loopring, <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-arbitrum\">Arbitrum<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-optimism-op\">Optimism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/y_nKPxpxmXxQZsuGzIy7v1M1D8FEyOf-WHiXqfbz7OsdcnQW16YePRBR3f6CzIX8MFOca9kn7eg1mceuIptpEleVwFavF06rVoDXqOqCPOCFv-NQ8qYRhk3BVyRIqcKmay2TCfJmRE6JNQxoHeu3wJM\" alt=\"\u0427\u0442\u043e \u0432\u0445\u043e\u0434\u0438\u0442 \u0432 \u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0436\u043d\u0443\u044e \u043a\u0430\u0440\u0442\u0443 Ethereum?\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The goal of The Surge is to reach 100,000 TPS (transactions per second) and beyond through rollups.<\/p>\n<p>A keystone is EIP\u20114844, known as Proto\u2011Danksharding. It introduces a new transaction type for large binary data blobs and organises their storage, cutting fees for rollup\u2011based L2s.<\/p>\n<p>In early September, ETH developers approved details of an upcoming network hard fork dubbed Dencun, which will implement EIP\u20114844 alongside several other changes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-text-wrappers-cards single_card\">\n<h2 class=\"card_label\">What does The Scourge entail?<\/h2>\n<p>The Scourge addresses Maximal Extractable Value (<a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-mev-in-ethereum\">MEV<\/a>), a mechanism that lets validators include, exclude or reorder transactions in a future Ethereum block. MEV, which harms the broader ecosystem, is dubbed an \u201cinvisible tax\u201d on using the network.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond enabling complex speculative strategies, MEV has raised acute questions about censorship. For instance, in October 2022 the share of transactions compliant with the requirements of the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/forklog\/28011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">exceeded<\/a> 50%.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/z0LD6d3MaQ8gNnAYocI4qy2VKH5yYbTzt78FImrw7ygCaw4vTDGNVIsTAu8XqODcMvXfb27P_w5l-KOk1kxvEB0aFX2t7GUvxHSIjoZca5fq9af_ZVEHokVh-2ojz777L4GFav9aGtB6lLeWSVOwow8\" alt=\"\u0427\u0442\u043e \u0432\u0445\u043e\u0434\u0438\u0442 \u0432 \u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0436\u043d\u0443\u044e \u043a\u0430\u0440\u0442\u0443 Ethereum?\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The aim of The Scourge is to create a robust, neutral mechanism for transaction inclusion, avoiding centralisation and other MEV\u2011related risks.<\/p>\n<p>The principal upgrade here is PBS (<a href=\"https:\/\/notes.ethereum.org\/@vbuterin\/pbs_censorship_resistance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">proposer\u2011builder separation<\/a>), which curbs validators\u2019 powers in block formation and introduces a new class of actors that order transactions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-text-wrappers-cards single_card\">\n<h2 class=\"card_label\">What is The Verge for?<\/h2>\n<p>This stage aims to remove barriers to storing and exploring the blockchain\u2019s full state. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/etherscan.io\/chartsync\/chainarchive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Etherscan<\/a>, a full Ethereum node weighs over 1.2 TB, while a full archive node is over 15 GB, and syncing new nodes can take several days.<\/p>\n<p>Processing and querying such data sets demands significant resources, a potential problem as Ethereum adoption widens.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/UvDUyRBWm4p22qj0m6BXgi9ZLJiFlr5oFTliuOvAxMkVKmrqCzdY2qzRVqMq0V1Z-tluH1zFOgelGT7TcjwKaiYEyPJdqCbLfh2gyOvSyoEDP8txSyT4YQGvRMwvCfDa6fDPrOBUDCLmh1_EMCjpcRs\" alt=\"\u0427\u0442\u043e \u0432\u0445\u043e\u0434\u0438\u0442 \u0432 \u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0436\u043d\u0443\u044e \u043a\u0430\u0440\u0442\u0443 Ethereum?\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The aim of The Verge is to make block verification very simple and fast.<\/p>\n<p>Buterin proposed easier access to Ethereum\u2019s full state via an upgraded <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-merkle-tree\">Merkle tree structure<\/a> and the use of zero\u2011knowledge technologies <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-are-rollups-and-how-do-they-scale-ethereum\">zkSNARK and zkSTARK<\/a>. Such changes would permit higher gas limits, aiding L2 scaling, and enable new kinds of light clients.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-text-wrappers-cards single_card\">\n<h2 class=\"card_label\">What problems will The Purge solve?<\/h2>\n<p>While The Verge focuses on verifying Ethereum\u2019s history, The Purge seeks to update how historical data are stored and recorded.<\/p>\n<p>The key proposal is <a href=\"https:\/\/eips.ethereum.org\/EIPS\/eip-4444\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">EIP\u20114444<\/a>, which introduces conditional checkpoints for syncing. For example, developers could choose a block depth of 300 days without downloading the chain all the way back to genesis.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/WeJnFs5tguCmMQ4lFDjKFOED3SQX31xwQ2C6DPLNrvWqVJk3Dip05xSTrSTOUvgrL7GhSqm2kgjP6umS2ts2rTzbCa0N9-4mOI4L2kAHW2efXiRp9CaRjr_21aofFHzCJpONrss3kipdi8krbcnj9II\" alt=\"\u0427\u0442\u043e \u0432\u0445\u043e\u0434\u0438\u0442 \u0432 \u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0436\u043d\u0443\u044e \u043a\u0430\u0440\u0442\u0443 Ethereum?\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The aim of The Purge is to simplify the protocol by pruning Ethereum\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>Active debate on these issues <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/ethereum\/comments\/qzvsfq\/impromptu_technical_ama_on_history_expiry\/?sort=new\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">began<\/a> in 2021. Buterin and other community members warned that, in time, full access to the ETH network might be possible only with specialised, expensive hardware\u2014risking centralisation and adding technical complexity to core operations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-text-wrappers-cards single_card\">\n<h2 class=\"card_label\">What is in The Splurge?<\/h2>\n<p>The Splurge is a grab\u2011bag of developments that do not fit elsewhere. Its best\u2011known milestone is the EIP\u20111559 token\u2011burning mechanism, activated in August 2021.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/po6-0ZmN-CGwCqC8hJgcDjV1NVdBYvnuq6Dw2qJcaQIEN_pyvc7ndqlj96KKZcqt235qatdBjXIbd2tI6oLRbqL_Bn1j5OU2yATpUe5Aol188T4877pe-9vTYQMFsS12mlQ0WU0bi92-vp8Xh_93R4M\" alt=\"\u0427\u0442\u043e \u0432\u0445\u043e\u0434\u0438\u0442 \u0432 \u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0436\u043d\u0443\u044e \u043a\u0430\u0440\u0442\u0443 Ethereum?\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The aim of The Splurge is to implement and refine items not covered in other tracks.<\/p>\n<p>ETH developers delivered <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-account-abstraction\">account abstraction<\/a> via the ERC\u20114337 token standard, enabling variants of smart\u2011contract\u2011based wallets.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond account abstraction, The Splurge allocates work to improve EVM efficiency and to tune the EIP\u20111559 burn mechanism.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-text-wrappers-cards single_card\">\n<h2 class=\"card_label\">What updates are expected by end\u20112023?<\/h2>\n<p>As of now, the Ethereum community has reached consensus on the forthcoming Dencun hard fork, expected at the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The upgrade will include elements from almost all tracks: scalability, data storage, removal of legacy features, EVM modifications and stronger infrastructure security.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the largest ETH test network, Goerli, will be shut down at the end of 2023. It is to be replaced by the Holesky testnet, designed for staking trials, infrastructure assessment and protocol testing.<\/p>\n<p>The only public estimate of completion across all planned upgrades <a href=\"https:\/\/forkast.news\/headlines\/vitalik-ethereum-55-complete-post-merge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">came<\/a> from Buterin: 55% as of July 2022.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is Ethereum\u2019s roadmap?\u00a0 The Ethereum roadmap is a multi\u2011stage plan to improve the protocol.
