Recently, the level of debate has risen significantly. The catalyst was a seemingly innocent tweet by Elon Musk.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Tesla &#038; Bitcoin <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YSswJmVZhP\">pic.twitter.com\/YSswJmVZhP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1392602041025843203?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 12, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abWe are concerned about the rapid increase in the use of fossil fuels for Bitcoin mining and [processing \u2014 editor&#8217;s note] transactions, especially coal, which has the worst emissions among all fuels\u00bb, the statement said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Tesla suspended selling its products for Bitcoin. In the days following the tweet and the company&#8217;s statement, the price of the digital gold fell below $40,000.<\/p>\n<p>The retreat from its all\u2011time high exceeded 40%. ForkLog examines these questions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-text-wrappers-keypoints article_keypoints\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recent discussions about Bitcoin mining&#8217;s environmental impact have intensified.<\/li>\n<li>Opinion leaders tend to paint with broad strokes; their arguments are often exaggerated and manipulative.<\/li>\n<li>More miners are turning to renewable energy, whose costs are falling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Domino Effect<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Tesla&#8217;s recent decision, in whose reserves there are 43,200 BTC worth about $1.5 billion, caused a stir in the community and well beyond. The implications of the announcement altered not only market sentiment but also many participants&#8217; views of Musk. Greenpeace <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/greenpeace-pauses-bitcoin-donations-over-high-energy-consumption\">ceased accepting<\/a> donations in the first cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abThe volumes of energy required to operate Bitcoin are becoming increasingly evident over time, so this policy no longer seems reasonable\u00bb, said a Greenpeace spokesperson.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The organisation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20140922005670\/en\/Greenpeace-USA-Accepts-Bitcoin-Donations-BitPay#.VCEBmvldX7x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">began accepting Bitcoin<\/a> in 2014. At the time Greenpeace noted the environmental advantages of digital gold in terms of lower transaction-processing costs compared with banks.<\/p>\n<p>Vice Premier Liu He <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-falls-below-37000-on-news-of-chinas-mining-ban\">stated<\/a> that the authorities intend to take measures regarding cryptocurrency mining and Bitcoin trading, imposing tighter oversight. The price of the first cryptocurrency accelerated its decline.<\/p>\n<p>According to journalist Colin Wu, Chinese senior officials first <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-falls-below-37000-on-news-of-chinas-mining-ban\">directly proposed banning cryptocurrency mining<\/a>. He believes this may be linked to high energy consumption.<\/p>\n<p>The official&#8217;s statement came a few days after three associations under the People\u2019s Bank of China <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/media-china-bans-support-for-cryptocurrency-related-business\">prohibited local companies<\/a> from supporting a crypto-related business, and citizens were advised to refrain from investing in that class of financial instruments. <\/p>\n<p> Shortly after, Huobi <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/huobi-and-okex-curtail-services-for-chinese-residents\">ceased hosting miners in mainland China<\/a>, and the cryptocurrency exchange OKEx briefly halted trading of its native token OKB on the p2p platform for Chinese citizens.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Concerned Public<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to a Nature Communications study, mining centers located in China will by 2024 consume more than 296.59 TWh of electricity and <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/chinas-bitcoin-farms-set-to-surpass-the-philippines-in-greenhouse-gas-emissions-by-2024\">will surpass the Philippines in greenhouse-gas emissions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to a group of Chinese and British economists, more than 78% of global mining capacity is located in China. A dirty business, a dirty currency.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance, the annual Bitcoin network energy expenditure stands at 116.56 TWh, surpassing the Philippines and the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"241\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cambridge-1024x241.png\" alt=\"Much Ado About Nothing: Why Bitcoin\u2019s Environmental Impact Is Exaggerated\" class=\"wp-image-136781\" srcset=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cambridge-1024x241.png 1024w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cambridge-300x71.png 300w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cambridge-768x181.png 768w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cambridge.png 1193w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Data: University of Cambridge.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That Bitcoin\u2019s energy consumption exceeds that of many mid-sized economies was <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/elon-musk-weighs-in-on-bitcoins-scalability-and-energy-use\">stated<\/a> by Musk in the days that followed. He proposed that the ten largest mining firms publish audits of their share of renewable energy in their operations.<\/p>\n<p>The European Central Bank recently published a report in which the environmental impact of cryptocurrency mining is described as a \u201ccause for concern.\u201d In a fresh study by Italy\u2019s monetary regulator, it states that Bitcoin\u2019s carbon footprint\u201440,000 times that of the Target Instant Payment Settlement (TIPS) benchmark\u2014is not to be taken lightly.<\/p>\n<p>British expert Nigel Topping, engaging with business circles ahead of the COP26 climate conference, said that Bitcoin-related questions are increasingly prominent \u201cin broader political debates.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abIt [Bitcoin] is becoming one of the negative climate factors. Climate-aware people are somewhat puzzled. It\u2019s simply a dumb idea. Proof-of-Work is fossil-fuel burning. All of this runs directly against what we are trying to achieve\u00bb, said Topping.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Not to miss a critique, Vitalik Buterin, the Ethereum founder, expressed the view that Bitcoin must develop its technological base to improve energy efficiency. Otherwise, digital gold \u201crisks being left behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Buterin noted that Ethereum is moving to a more environmentally friendly Proof-of-Stake consensus, which is expected to markedly reduce energy consumption.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abI truly think these concerns are real. Resource use is certainly enormous. This isn\u2019t something that will by itself destroy the world, but its substantial negative impact is obvious\u00bb.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Experts\u2019 Incompetence<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Climate-focused journalist Eric Holthaus, in February, wrote an article arguing that at current growth in energy use, Bitcoin will never replace the global financial system.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abCurrently Bitcoin, with its high fees, can process about 350,000 transactions per day. At current energy\u2011consumption rates, the cryptocurrency would need 14 world-scale energy productions to handle 1 billion card transactions that occur daily\u00bb.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Holthaus argues that Bitcoin is not just inefficient \u2014 it actively undermines efficiency, making the world worse.<\/p>\n<p>Coin Metrics co\u2011founder Nic Carter called Holthaus\u2019s reasoning \u201cdeeply flawed.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abExperts who repeat such logical chains are trapped in a web of misconceptions \u2014 largely because they refuse to engage with the topic\u00bb, said the researcher.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Carter noted that Bitcoin can serve as a base for other payment networks, including the second\u2011layer solution Lightning Network, <span class=\"old_tooltip\" data-descr=\"\u0421\u0438\u0441\u0442\u0435\u043c\u0430, \u043f\u043e\u0437\u0432\u043e\u043b\u044f\u044e\u0449\u0430\u044f \u0435\u0432\u0440\u043e\u043f\u0435\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0438\u043c \u043a\u043e\u043c\u043f\u0430\u043d\u0438\u044f\u043c \u0438 \u043f\u043e\u0442\u0440\u0435\u0431\u0438\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044f\u043c \u0441\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0448\u0430\u0442\u044c \u043c\u0435\u0436\u0434\u0443 \u0441\u043e\u0431\u043e\u0439 \u043c\u043e\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0442\u0430\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0432\u043e\u0434\u044b.\">Target Instant Payment Settlement (TIPS)<\/span>, <span class=\"old_tooltip\" data-descr=\"\u0441\u0430\u0439\u0434\u0447\u0435\u0439\u043d\u044b Liquid \u0438 Rootstock\">Liquid sidechains and Rootstock<\/span>, and smart-contract platforms like Blockstack.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abOne Bitcoin transaction, therefore, can imply thousands of off-chain transactions in any of these side networks. Exchanges and custodians can settle among themselves in a single day, aggregating hundreds of thousands of payments\u00bb, Carter explained.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Attention should be paid to the metrics of the largest centralized payment systems Mastercard and Visa, often used as a benchmark by sceptics comparing them to the \u201cinefficient\u201d Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>Mastercard\u2019s workforce has grown steadily from 2017\u2019s 13,400 employees to 21,000 in 2020 (+56%). Operational expenses exceed $7 billion a year.<\/p>\n<p>Visa, which has a notably larger market share, shows a similar growth trajectory and comparable operating expenses.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Visa and Mastercard, Bitcoin is decentralised; it has no formal structure, ongoing operating costs, management, or thousands of employees. Anyone can join the open network, sending and receiving payments of any size without censorship. Moreover, the first cryptocurrency is more closely associated with digital gold than with a medium of exchange for ordinary purchases.<\/p>\n<p>It is also instructive to compare with other sectors. Data: Galaxy Digital.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Economist Saifedean Ammous, author of \u201cThe Bitcoin Standard: The Economic Case for Bitcoin,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/saifedean\/status\/1393481588785258496\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a> the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abAll attempts to compare Bitcoin\u2019s energy use with banks, settlement systems, central banks, or gold miss the main point \u2014 real opportunity costs. Bitcoin does not replace them. They can coexist with Bitcoin.\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Galaxy Digital\u2019s analysis also notes that Bitcoin miners\u2019 energy costs are 12.1 times lower than the energy consumed by always-on devices in the United States. The figure rises to 19.4 when including energy losses from transmission and distribution (per World Bank and IEA estimates).<\/p>\n<p>Carter noted that most of Bitcoin\u2019s energy is tied to mining coins whose issuance halves every four years. As issuance slows and profits fall, miners\u2019 incentives to expand capacity similarly diminish. In the long run, this should positively affect the environmental footprint of cryptocurrency mining.<\/p>\n<p>In Nature Communications, Carter found a number of flaws. For instance, it lacks detail on the energy-use structure and relies on somewhat dated CBECI data.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abI expected the study to rely heavily on energy-structure data at the level of Chinese provinces,\u00bb tweeted Nic Carter, co\u2011founder of Coin Metrics. \u00abBut that is not present. They claim to have accounted for all of this\u2026 but it has not been demonstrated in the work (!). They merely assert that they quantified it.\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to Carter, calculating the total energy use of miners is straightforward given the network\u2019s total hash rate, the dominant miner models in the market, the hashing power of the latest hardware, and its power consumption. What is far harder is calculating the energy-use structure.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">As anyone knows, if you want to understand bitcoin c02 impact, you need to 1. identify where it is being mined and 2. identify the energy mix that those miners are using. For example, F2Pool is based in Beijing, but that does not mean it only serves local miners.<\/p>\n<p>Carter added that halving does not guarantee price growth that correlates with hashrate and, ultimately, energy consumption.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Yep, they\u2019re relying on the absolutely insane assumption that due to the halving, the bitcoin price will mechanically increase. This is a key cornerstone of the analysis, as they\u2019re projecting Bitcoin emissions in the future. This is the cornerstone of their analysis, projecting future Bitcoin emissions. It was meant to be a scientific paper\u00bb.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On CBECI\u2019s map of mining, countries and Chinese regions with the largest share of Bitcoin\u2019s hashrate are shown. The analysis uses data from BTC.com, ViaBTC, and Poolin, which together account for only about 35% of total hashrate.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/cbeci.org\/mining_map\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>, Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia generate roughly 40% of global hashrate. In the electricity sectors of these regions, fossil fuels are predominant.<\/p>\n<p>CBECI data has not been updated since April 2020, which calls their current relevance into question. Colin Wu reports that in March, Inner Mongolia officials <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/media-inner-mongolia-authorities-propose-banning-cryptocurrency-mining\">proposed<\/a> banning cryptocurrency mining in line with a carbon-reduction program. In May, provincial authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/inner-mongolia-authorities-launch-crackdown-on-illegal-cryptocurrency-mining\">began cracking down on illegal mining<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One should also note that during price rallies, older and \u201cpower-hungry\u201d devices like the Antminer S9 can come back online.<\/p>\n<p>All of the above factors should be taken into account, as they influence the energy-use structure on which Bitcoin\u2019s real environmental impact depends.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bitcoin as a Driver of Green Energy<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>To stay competitive and profitable, miners must seek cheaper energy sources.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abIn some countries, and in particular in China, mining companies tend to relocate between regions due to seasonal fluctuations in renewable-energy generation\u00bb, said the CBECI disclaimer on its site.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In the dry season, a substantial number of miners from Sichuan and Yunnan move north to Xinjiang or Inner Mongolia, where fossil fuels predominate. Besides solar and wind, a promising avenue is the use of associated petroleum gas. Projects along these lines are pursued by <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ecologists-comment-on-gazprom-nefts-associated-petroleum-gas-mining-project\">Gazprom Neft<\/a> and the Norwegian company <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/equinor-energy-to-channel-associated-gas-from-the-bakken-oil-field-to-bitcoin-mining\">Equinor Energy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018 a study in Nature Climate Change argued that Bitcoin mining could raise Earth\u2019s temperature by 2\u00b0C. The study\u2019s theses were cited by many outlets, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/14\/climate\/coinbase-cryptocurrency-energy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nicol\u00e1s Carter argues this will never happen because Bitcoin\u2019s energy structure is increasingly less carbon-dependent. He notes that in the United States there is a growing share of miners pursuing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) objectives. Against this backdrop, mining is less concentrated in coal\u2011heavy regions like Inner Mongolia. <\/p>\n<p>Many industry participants have launched initiatives like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/ripple-coinshares-consensys-join-crypto-climate-accord\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Crypto Climate Accord<\/a>, intended to reduce the carbon footprint of Bitcoin mining and make the crypto sector more sustainable by 2030.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abAs renewable energy becomes more efficient and suitable for crypto mining, Bitcoin may ultimately act as a significant catalyst for developing these technologies\u00bb, Carter said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A sizable portion of mining capacity is located in cooler climates. Iceland attracts miners not only for low temperatures but also for inexpensive geothermal power.<\/p>\n<p>Canada hosts substantial mining capacity as well, where 67% of electricity is generated from renewable sources.<\/p>\n<p>Prominent trader WhalePanda expressed the view that the industry stands to gain from China\u2019s potential crackdown.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Let China actually ban Bitcoin and Bitcoin mining.<\/p>\n<p>Mining would be more decentralized, black market for Bitcoin would thrive and the \u201cChina controls Bitcoin\u201d false narrative would disappear.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 WhalePanda (@WhalePanda) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WhalePanda\/status\/1395750459651117064?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 21, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>A potential ban on mining in China would make Bitcoin mining more decentralised. It would be aided by a shift of hashrate toward more stable and \u201cgreener\u201d jurisdictions, and the myth of Central China&#8217;s dominion over digital gold would fade away.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from Square and ARK Investment <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.ctfassets.net\/2d5q1td6cyxq\/2D2BnksJjavw4a6SUvAPwZ\/c42a9e3a520b0cc3b230cda3b43eead5\/BCEI_White_Paper_.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">are convinced<\/a> that Bitcoin stimulates the growth of renewable energy. One indicator is Greenidge Generation\u2019s decision to neutralise its carbon footprint through carbon-offset purchases.<\/p>\n<p>Greenidge Generation <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/greenidge-generation-to-become-carbon-neutral\">will direct<\/a> funds to a portfolio of emissions-reduction projects. The company plans to devote part of its profits to building capacity for renewable-energy generation.<\/p>\n<p>Similar measures are being undertaken by other firms. For example, Ninepoint Partners, the Toronto-listed Bitcoin ETF provider, <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ninepoint-partners-to-allocate-portion-of-management-fees-to-reducing-carbon-footprint\">will direct<\/a> a portion of fee income to reducing its carbon footprint. Similar steps <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/one-river-applies-for-a-carbon-neutral-bitcoin-etf\">will be taken<\/a> by hedge fund One River Asset Management.<\/p>\n<p>Cryptocurrency exchanges FTX and BitMEX <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ftx-and-bitmex-to-channel-part-of-fees-to-carbon-offsetting\">plan to<\/a> donate a small percentage of transaction fees to organisations working on offsetting carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<p>American mining company Marathon Digital Holdings <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/marathon-to-build-a-green-data-center-for-bitcoin-mining\">announced<\/a> plans to build a carbon\u2011neutral data centre in Texas with a capacity of 300 MW. <\/p>\n<p>North American mining firms <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/elon-musk-discusses-prospects-for-green-bitcoin-mining-with-miners\">formed<\/a> a Bitcoin Mining Council to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the industry. They agreed at a meeting with Elon Musk; executives from Argo Blockchain, Blockcap, Core Scientific, Galaxy Digital, HIVE Blockchain, Hut8 Mining, Marathon, and Riot Blockchain participated in the discussion with the Tesla founder.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abWe aim to explain how the Bitcoin network operates as a unique buyer of energy, capable of unlocking substantially more solar and wind capacity\u00bb, said the foreword to the Square and ARK Investment document.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Researchers noted that over the past decade the normalized cost of solar and wind energy fell by about 90% and 71%, respectively (to around 3\u20134 cents per kWh for solar and 2\u20135 cents for wind). The corresponding figure for fossil energy lingers at around 5\u20137 cents per kWh.<\/p>\n<p>Experts have suggested that renewables, particularly solar, will become even more affordable with time. They also foresee the development of new use cases, such as water desalination, carbon dioxide removal from the atmosphere, and green hydrogen.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Arguments from critics are often exaggerated or even manipulative. Many opinion leaders simply lack a deep understanding of how Bitcoin\u2019s protocol works. There is a lack of up-to-date data on energy consumption structures, China\u2019s role, and renewables\u2019 share in the hashrate.<\/p>\n<p>Undoubtedly, the Bitcoin network is not easy to label as energy-efficient \u2014 mining consumes colossal resources. Is such \u201cgluttony\u201d justified? Value is subjective, and so is the acceptability of costs to create goods that serve market participants. The latter may differ across contexts of time preference, motivation, beliefs about money, and risk tolerance.<\/p>\n<p>For those who view cryptocurrencies as being used only in Ponzi schemes or for money laundering, Bitcoin will appear as an environmental catastrophe or an unsustainable payment system.<\/p>\n<p>Yet all is relative\u2014 the petroleum-dollar, underpinned by the U.S. military,<a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/experts-say-bitcoin-is-more-environmentally-friendly-than-the-petrodollar\">poses a greater threat to the environment<\/a> than Bitcoin mining. In 2017, the U.S. military used up to 1 million barrels of oil daily. If the DoD were a country, that level of consumption would place it 55th in the world by CO2 emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Strategic thinker Alex Glatstein and co-founder James McGinnis of David Energy describe Bitcoin\u2019s energy intensity as a feature that \u201ccreates security.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abFrom a technological perspective, this is exactly what makes Bitcoin so fantastic\u00bb, said McGinnis.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Glatstein reminded that Bitcoin has an important moral argument in its favour:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abThere are 1.2 billion people living under inflation. Inflation runs in the two- and three-digit ranges. There are 4.3 billion people living under autocracy. [\u2026] Let those who say Bitcoin has no social value use the Sudanese pound for a year, and then tell me that Bitcoin\u2019s value is exaggerated or non-existent\u00bb.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Indeed, for tens of millions, Bitcoin is a way to preserve funds for essential needs in hyperinflationary environments, and a means to circumvent capital controls. For them, Bitcoin\u2019s energy intensity is more than justified, and comparing it to the Netherlands is hardly apt.<\/p>\n<p>To stay in the game, miners will continue to minimize costs by turning to cheap renewables.
