questions demand for the digital euro"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The European Central Bank (ECB) should rely on cooperation with commercial banks in issuing the digital euro, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbva.com\/en\/the-ecb-should-encourage-public-private-cooperation-in-the-design-of-the-digital-euro\/\">believes<\/a> Pablo Urbiola, head of BBVA&#8217;s Digital Regulation and Trends division, one of Spain&#8217;s largest banks.<\/p>\n<p>He also expressed concern about the issuance of a central bank digital currency (CBDC), questioned the demand for it and urged the ECB to study the issue carefully.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cGiven all innovations in the payments market, it is unclear what customer needs the digital euro can meet,\u201d said Urbiola.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In his view, regulators should take into account all opportunities and risks of CBDC.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt is crucial that the overall framework designed by the ECB be flexible enough to allow private players to develop business models in a competitive space,\u201d said the BBVA executive.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Urbiola added that Spanish banks are ready for the digital euro, and BBVA has participated in CBDC testing alongside 15 other major financial institutions.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIf the digital euro is intended to reduce cash usage, it should be developed as its electronic version \u2014 easy to use with basic functionality,\u201d the banker said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Earlier, the European Data Protection Board <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/edpb-urges-focus-on-privacy-in-the-digital-euro\">urged focus on the privacy of the digital euro<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, ECB Executive Board member Fabio Panetta <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ecb-outlines-the-digital-euros-advantages-over-private-stablecoins\">stated<\/a> that central banks have no commercial interest in storing, managing and monetizing user data.<\/p>\n<p>In early June, the ECB <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ecb-flags-risks-for-central-banks-without-their-own-cbdcs\">warned<\/a> of problems for central
