They trained the system to balance dexterity, speed and safety on the device.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A team led by PhD student Shen Li developed an algorithm that, in addition to preventing collisions, allows &#8220;safe impacts&#8221;. This allowed the robot to complete its task while its impact on the person remained small.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"619\" height=\"348\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-9JrDMBg2HE\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Li said that developing algorithms to prevent physical harm while maintaining effectiveness is a critically important task in the design of assistive devices.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;By enabling robots to exert harmless effects on people, our method can find effective movement trajectories that guarantee human safety,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Experiments showed that the robot could handle the task even when a person performed other actions, such as checking their phone.
