The State Committee of Abkhazia for Communications, Mass Media and Digital Development extended<\/a> restrictions on access to sites that use cryptocurrency miners.<\/p>\n

Previous decree<\/a> was in effect from December 28, 2020 to June 1, 2021. Now the restrictions have been extended to March 31, 2022.<\/p>\n

Telecommunications operators must implement technical measures to block domain names and page pointers that enable “carrying out cryptocurrency mining”.<\/p>\n

The exact sites in question are not specified.<\/p>\n

Head of the committee Beslan Khalvash said<\/a>, that the order also covers the closure of a number of VPN services, as providers have equipment to carry out blocks:<\/p>\n

“Previously we blocked domain names and IP addresses; some users moved to VPNs, now we will block them. I would not like to comment on how to circumvent this ban; in the fight against mining we are entering a completely different level”.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

In 2020, Abkhazia banned mining<\/a> and restricted the import of equipment for cryptocurrency mining amid power-supply problems<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, authorities extended the ban until 2022<\/a> and approved a number of penalties for engaging in such activity.<\/p>\n
