The video game developer and publisher Ubisoft plans to invest in blockchain startups and create its own projects based on the play-to-earn concept. CEO Yves Guillemot said this during a teleconference outlining Ubisoft’s first half of the 2021\/22 fiscal year, according to IGN<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On October 28, the French company published<\/a> its financial report. In the document Ubisoft said that it is actively exploring blockchain technology, which has interested it since its inception. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis long-term research is tied to the ongoing search for Ubisoft innovations and new ways to bring gamers closer to the true participants in virtual worlds. The initiative also gives the company an opportunity to reflect on the best ways to overcome the initial blockchain limitations related to sustainability and scalability,\u201d the document states.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Duguet, Ubisoft’s Chief Financial Officer, described blockchain technology as a \u201crevolution.\u201d He noted that the company could use it to monetise its games:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201c[Blockchain] will enable the use of the play-to-earn model, through which a greater number of gamers will be able to earn content, own content, and we think this will contribute to significant growth in the industry. We are working with many small companies implementing blockchain, and we are beginning to understand how this could affect the industry, so we want to become one of the key players.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In October Ubisoft participated in the financing round<\/a> of the Hong Kong-based blockchain-game provider Animoca Brands.<\/p>\n

Earlier in April, the company joined the Tezos blockchain platform ecosystem<\/a> as a corporate validator.<\/p>\n
