This follows from a draft of rules prepared by the government, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gpwonline.co.za\/Gazettes\/Pages\/Published-National-Government-Gazettes.aspx\">Government Gazette<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Current rules allow investments in cryptocurrencies up to 2.5% of <span data-descr=\"assets under management\" class=\"old_tooltip\">AUM<\/span> within the broader category \u201cother assets\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The definition of cryptocurrencies excludes the possibility of investments, including in <span data-descr=\"non-fungible tokens\" class=\"old_tooltip\">NFT<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier Forklog reported on authorities&#8217; plans to tighten oversight of the country&#8217;s cryptocurrency industry.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2021, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority of South Africa <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/cryptocurrencies-to-come-under-regulation-in-south-africa\">brought forward for consideration<\/a> a proposal to regulate digital assets.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the governor of the South African Reserve Bank, Lesetja Kganyago <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/south-africa-central-bank-chief-declines-to-call-bitcoin-a-currency\">declined to recognise Bitcoin as currency<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Follow ForkLog news on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ForkLog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Twitter<\/a>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa&#8217;s pension funds will be prohibited from investing in digital assets directly or indirectly.
