In June 2024, he <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/elon-musk-envisions-teslas-market-cap-reaching-25-trillion-with-optimus-robots\">stated<\/a> that Optimus would boost Tesla&#8217;s market capitalization to $25 trillion\u2014more than half the value of all firms in the S&#038;P 500 index at that time. Back in July 2024, ahead of the October <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/tesla-unveils-autonomous-taxis-and-bus\">presentation<\/a> of robotaxis, he stated that Tesla&#8217;s AI team would &#8220;double down&#8221; on developing Dojo.<\/p>\n<p>Just weeks after asserting that Dojo 2\u2014the company&#8217;s second supercomputing system based on its own D2 chips\u2014would launch in 2026, Musk changed course, calling the project an &#8220;evolutionary dead end.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Retrospective<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The first mentions of Dojo date back to 2019. On April 22, the company <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2019\/04\/22\/tesla-vaunts-creation-of-the-best-chip-in-the-world-for-self-driving\/\">discussed<\/a> its autopilot and the underlying artificial intelligence technology. The firm shared information about specially designed chips. At that time, Musk hinted at Dojo, positioning the project as a supercomputer for AI training.<\/p>\n<p>Over the following years, the entrepreneur touted the development&#8217;s capabilities.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Dojo\u2014our training supercomputer\u2014will be able to process vast amounts of video data and efficiently run hyperspace arrays with a huge number of parameters, large memory, and ultra-high bandwidth between cores. More on this later,&#8221; he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1224050025564725248\">stated<\/a> in 2020.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Recently, Musk and Tesla have scarcely mentioned Dojo. In August 2024, the company began promoting Cortex\u2014a &#8220;giant new AI training supercomputer&#8221; being built at the firm&#8217;s headquarters in Austin.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/telegram.org\/js\/telegram-widget.js?22\" data-telegram-post=\"forklogAI\/5154\" data-width=\"100%\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Musk said Cortex would have &#8220;enormous storage for video training of <span data-descr=\"FSD \u2014 Tesla's proprietary system positioned as a step towards fully autonomous driving\" class=\"old_tooltip\">FSD<\/span> and Optimus.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalassets.tesla.com\/tesla-contents\/image\/upload\/IR\/TSLA-Q4-2024-Update.pdf\">report<\/a> for shareholders for the fourth quarter of 2024, Tesla shared updates on Cortex but said nothing about Dojo.<\/p>\n<p>Opinions on the Dojo saga are divided. Some <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/09\/02\/tesla-dojo-the-rise-and-fall-of-elon-musks-ai-supercomputer\/\">consider<\/a> it another example of Musk making promises and then failing to deliver. The situation is exacerbated by declining electric vehicle sales and a weak <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/tesla-launches-driverless-taxi-service\">launch of the robotaxi service<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Others argue that the closure of Dojo is not a failure but a strategic move.
