{"id":53325,"date":"2021-11-22T19:02:02","date_gmt":"2021-11-22T17:02:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=53325"},"modified":"2025-09-03T14:38:40","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T11:38:40","slug":"public-company-phunware-invests-23-8m-in-bitcoin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/public-company-phunware-invests-23-8m-in-bitcoin\/","title":{"rendered":"Public company Phunware invests $23.8m in bitcoin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Nasdaq-listed mobile-device software company Phunware <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2021\/11\/22\/2339013\/0\/en\/Phunware-Acquires-Additional-Bitcoin.html\">announced<\/a> an additional purchase of 398 BTC for about $23.8 million at an average price of $59,917.<\/p>\n<p>According to the press release, as of November 22 the company owned about 529 BTC (they spent about $31.8 million, based on an average purchase price of about $60,191).<\/p>\n<p>Phunware is known for developing an app to support Donald Trump\u2019s 2020 presidential campaign. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2020\/11\/18\/trump-campaign-app-maker-phunware\/\">Fortune<\/a>, it allowed tracking the movements of his supporters and offered personal access to their social networks.<\/p>\n<p>In early November the developer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phunware.com\/blog\/phunware-obtains-additional-bitcoin\/\">announced<\/a> a purchase of 100 BTC for about $6.2 million at an average price of roughly $62,030. At that time Phunware said it owned 127 BTC worth $7.75 million.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2020, MicroStrategy became the first publicly traded company <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/microstrategy-becomes-the-first-nasdaq-listed-company-to-invest-part-of-its-capital-in-bitcoin\">to invest a portion of its own capital<\/a> ($250 million) in bitcoin. Later the board of directors<a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/microstrategy-bets-another-175-million-on-bitcoin\"> approved a policy of increasing investments<\/a> in digital gold from cash reserves.<\/p>\n<p>Following this, MicroStrategy\u2019s CEO Michael Saylor said he was confident that <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/microstrategy-chief-executive-says-private-firms-will-move-into-bitcoin-in-coming-months\">other private firms would follow the example of the company<\/a>. In the US, such investments were pursued by <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/square-invests-a-further-170-million-in-bitcoin\">Square\u2019s Jack Dorsey<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/elon-musks-tesla-invested-1-5-billion-in-bitcoin-the-assets-price-rose-to-44800\">Tesla\u2019s Elon Musk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2020 the analytics-software provider issued convertible bonds<a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/microstrategy-raises-650-million-for-bitcoin-purchase\"> worth $650 million<\/a> to buy bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2021 the company issued debt securities<a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/microstrategy-raises-more-than-1-billion-in-debt-financing-to-buy-bitcoin\"> worth more than $1 billion<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/microstrategy-buys-more-bitcoin-for-1-026-billion\"> again invested<\/a> the raised funds in cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p>In March MicroStrategy acquired <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/microstrategy-invests-another-15-million-in-bitcoin\">328 BTC<\/a>, about <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/microstrategy-buys-another-205-btc-at-a-price-below-50000\">205 BTC<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/microstrategy-buys-additional-bitcoin-for-15-million\">262 BTC<\/a>. The firm invested $15 million in digital gold <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/microstrategy-makes-a-further-15-million-investment-in-bitcoin\">in April<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/microstrategy-adds-15-million-to-bitcoin-holdings\"> May<\/a>.
