{"id":55059,"date":"2021-12-22T11:23:37","date_gmt":"2021-12-22T09:23:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=55059"},"modified":"2025-09-03T23:30:46","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T20:30:46","slug":"fbi-confiscates-3879-btc-stolen-from-a-cold-wallet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/fbi-confiscates-3879-btc-stolen-from-a-cold-wallet\/","title":{"rendered":"FBI Confiscates 3,879 BTC Stolen From a Cold Wallet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. Department of Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdca\/pr\/united-states-files-civil-action-return-150-million-embezzled-funds-sony-fbi-tracks\">\u0441\u043e\u043e\u0431\u0449\u0438\u043b<\/a> about the return of funds that were allegedly stolen from a subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation, converted into cryptocurrency, and later seized by the FBI during the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>According to authorities, in May 2021 an employee at the company siphoned more than $154 million by moving the funds between accounts and forging instructions for the transactions.<\/p>\n<p>He then converted them into about 3,879 BTC (more than $190 million as of writing), and later transferred them to a cold wallet.<\/p>\n<p>During the investigation, law enforcement obtained the private key to the wallet. How exactly they did so was not disclosed. In early December, the FBI seized the assets.<\/p>\n<p>The case also involved Japanese police, Sony itself, and Citibank.<\/p>\n<p>In June, the FBI <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/fbi-recovers-63-7-btc-from-colonial-pipeline-ransom-gains-access-to-a-bitcoin-wallet\">returned 63.7 BTC<\/a> from the ransom paid to hackers by Colonial Pipeline, and in December <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/fbi-seizes-more-than-39-btc-from-wallet-of-russian-national-linked-to-revil\">seized more than 39 BTC<\/a> from a Russian national linked to the REvil group.
