{"id":57143,"date":"2022-02-04T10:22:15","date_gmt":"2022-02-04T08:22:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=57143"},"modified":"2025-09-04T10:12:48","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T07:12:48","slug":"mit-and-the-fed-publish-white-paper-on-the-digital-dollar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/mit-and-the-fed-publish-white-paper-on-the-digital-dollar\/","title":{"rendered":"MIT and the Fed publish white paper on the digital dollar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonfed.org\/publications\/one-time-pubs\/project-hamilton-phase-1-executive-summary.aspx\">presented<\/a> a white paper and open-source <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-central-bank-digital-currency-cbdc\">CBDC<\/a> as part of the first phase of examining its potential issuance.<\/p>\n<p>The Hamilton project <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/fed-outlines-research-into-issuing-a-digital-dollar\">was undertaken<\/a> for about two years. The documents were made publicly accessible and open for comments from interested parties via an online form.<\/p>\n<p>The CBDC code envisions:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No intermediaries or fees, with the caveat that policymakers may change these parameters;<\/li>\n<li>A full transaction history;<\/li>\n<li>A throughput of 1.7 million <span data-descr=\"transactions per second\" class=\"old_tooltip\">TPS<\/span>;<\/li>\n<li>Finalization of transactions within two seconds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>There remain many unresolved issues in determining whether and how to implement a Federal Reserve payment system for the United States. Open-source software provides an important means of collaboration, experimentation and deployment<\/em>, said Neha Narula, director of the MIT Digital Currency Initiative.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In the second phase, researchers will study alternative technical solutions to improve the CBDC&#8217;s scalable research model developed in the previous stage.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, researchers will test previously unexplored designs and features, and assess possible trade-offs. <\/p>\n<p>Security and programmability will be prioritized.
