{"id":57238,"date":"2022-02-06T12:42:55","date_gmt":"2022-02-06T10:42:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=57238"},"modified":"2025-09-04T10:42:32","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T07:42:32","slug":"bank-of-england-says-retail-cbdc-wallet-launch-is-unlikely","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/bank-of-england-says-retail-cbdc-wallet-launch-is-unlikely\/","title":{"rendered":"Bank of England says retail CBDC wallet launch is &#8216;unlikely&#8217;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even if a positive decision is taken on issuing <span data-descr=\"central bank digital currency\" class=\"old_tooltip\">CBDC<\/span>, the Bank of England does not intend to develop a wallet for retail use of the national digital currency. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblockcrypto.com\/post\/133153\/bank-of-england-is-highly-unlikely-to-develop-a-retail-wallet-for-cbdc-says-official\">The Block<\/a> reported this, according to Katie Forcun, a senior manager in the regulator&#8217;s CBDC division.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI think it is safe to say that the launch of a retail wallet by the Bank of England is unlikely,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to Forcun, it is more likely that such digital wallets would be developed by the private sector.<\/p>\n<p>The Bank of England has not yet decided whether to launch CBDC. By the end of 2022, the central bank, together with the UK Treasury, <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bank-of-england-to-hold-public-consultations-on-digital-pound-in-2022\">will conduct<\/a> public consultations on the topic.<\/p>\n<p>Forcun noted that most of the technical aspects of the proposed instrument are not yet agreed. In her words, it remains unclear whether the CBDC will be based on blockchain technology.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cFor us, this remains an open question.
