{"id":60852,"date":"2022-05-02T12:13:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-02T09:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=60852"},"modified":"2025-09-05T08:45:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T05:45:07","slug":"belgian-regulator-tightens-oversight-of-the-crypto-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/belgian-regulator-tightens-oversight-of-the-crypto-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"Belgian Regulator Tightens Oversight of the Crypto Industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Belgian Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA) has introduced mandatory registration for cryptocurrency exchanges and custodial-wallet operators. <a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.fsma.be\/en\/news\/cryptocurrencies-new-rules-enter-force\\\">The regulator said<\/a> on its website.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\\\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\\\">\n<p>\\&#8221;Providers of [cryptocurrency services], operating as of May 1, 2022, must notify FSMA of activity by July 1, 2022 and file for registration by September 1, 2022,\\&#8221; the regulator said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>They added that the new regime is introduced to bring clarity to the regulation of the crypto industry. Unregistered companies face fines and \\&#8221;more serious legal consequences.\\&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\\\"https:\/\/triple-a.io\/crypto-ownership\/\\\">the study<\/a> TripleA, as of 2021, 272,990 Belgians owned cryptocurrencies (2.36% of the population).<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, FSMA experts calculated that between May 2019 and September 2020, the country\\&#8217;s citizens <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/crypto-and-forex-scammers-defraud-belgians-of-at-least-e10-million\">lost \u20ac10 million<\/a> due to fraudulent online platforms.
