{"id":61746,"date":"2022-05-20T10:35:14","date_gmt":"2022-05-20T07:35:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=61746"},"modified":"2025-09-05T13:59:23","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T10:59:23","slug":"panamas-president-does-not-back-a-cryptocurrency-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/panamas-president-does-not-back-a-cryptocurrency-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Panama&#8217;s president does not back a cryptocurrency bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Panama&#8217;s President Laurentino Cartiso said he would refuse to sign the bill passed by Parliament regulating the use of cryptocurrencies in its current form.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the conference <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-05-19\/panama-president-will-refuse-to-sign-crypto-law-in-current-form\">Bloomberg New Economy Gateway Latin America<\/a>, the politician said:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIf I answer right now, with the information I have, and it is not enough \u2014 I will not sign this law.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The provisions of the document should ensure adequate measures to combat money laundering, the head of state said. Cartiso added that his team of lawyers would study the law and provide recommendations on what to do with it. The president can sign it or veto it in full or in part.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI must be very careful if the law contains provisions related to money laundering. For us it is extremely important to counter this activity,\u201d Cartiso stressed.<\/p>\n<p>Panama <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fatf-gafi.org\/publications\/high-risk-and-other-monitored-jurisdictions\/documents\/increased-monitoring-march-2022.html#:~:text=The%20following%20countries%20had%20their,Sudan%2C%20Uganda%2C%20and%20Zimbabwe.\">is on<\/a> the so-called \u201cgray list\u201d <span data-descr=\"Financial Action Task Force\" class=\"old_tooltip\">FATF<\/span>. The list includes jurisdictions that are under special scrutiny by the global regulator, as they have undertaken obligations to address strategic deficiencies in their <span data-descr=\"Anti-money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism (AML\/FT)\" class=\"old_tooltip\">AML\/FT<\/span> regime. The authorities of the country missed all deadlines agreed with the Group in 2019, according to the March report.<\/p>\n<p>The National Assembly of Panama <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/panama-approves-bill-regulating-cryptocurrencies\">approved<\/a> the cryptocurrency bill in March. Its provisions also envisage the use of blockchain technology to digitize the state. Supporters say that the proposed provisions could turn the country into a Latin American digital hub and attract investment from financial technology companies.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cFrom what I have heard \u2014 it&#8217;s a good, innovative law.
