Oracle has begun reviewing TikTok’s content algorithms and moderation models for potential manipulation by Chinese authorities. Axios<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to the report, Oracle wants to ensure that the content shown on TikTok “meets users’ expectations”, and that the recommendation algorithms are not subjected to manipulation. The service will also regularly audit its moderation methods, including automated and manual systems.<\/p>\n

TikTok confirmed the Axios report.<\/p>\n

Content moderation on the platform has been contentious for several years. In 2019, The Washington Post \u0441\u043e\u043e\u0431\u0449\u0438\u043b\u0430<\/a> that the Beijing office often instructed American staff to restrict certain videos.<\/p>\n

In the same year The Guardian \u043e\u043f\u0443\u0431\u043b\u0438\u043a\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043b\u0430<\/a> a portion of ByteDance’s internal documents. According to them, Beijing required moderators to censor videos mentioning Tiananmen Square, Tibetan independence, the banned Falun Gong religious group, and other sensitive topics.<\/p>\n

ByteDance denied all accusations and said that American moderators did not receive such instructions.<\/p>\n

However, a BuzzFeed News investigation from June 2022 \u0434\u043e\u043a\u0430\u0437\u0430\u043b\u043e<\/a> a close link between TikTok and Beijing authorities. Journalists found that U.S. citizen data had repeatedly been accessed by staff in China.<\/p>\n

Following that TikTok \u043e\u0431\u044a\u044f\u0432\u0438\u043b<\/a> that it would move all traffic to the United States to Oracle’s cloud infrastructure. According to the company, this would protect American users’ data from prying eyes.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the Trump administration \u043f\u044b\u0442\u0430\u043b\u0430\u0441\u044c<\/a> to force ByteDance to sell TikTok to an American company. Otherwise, the platform could be blocked in the United States.<\/p>\n
