Only the reimbursing hacker can mint the token, thereby joining the white-hat category \u2014 <span data-descr=\"white hat\" class=\"old_tooltip\">white hat<\/span>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIf you haven&#8217;t returned the funds yet, you can do so right now. The attackers exploited a vulnerability in the smart contract that allowed unauthorized withdrawals.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts at Coinbase found that hundreds of imitators joined the original attackers. They copied the exploit code and used it, changing only the token type and amount, as well as the recipient address.<\/p>\n<p>Nomad&#8217;s team quickly offered all of them 90% of the stolen funds back in exchange for white-hat status to avoid prosecution. By August 8, the project had reimbursed around $32.6 million.<\/p>\n<p>Most users reacted negatively to the NFT initiative. Some called it \u201ccomedic\u201d and \u201cclownish.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIs this what the team came up with to solve the problem? Rewarding a hacker with a useless NFT?\u201d, one commenter asked.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Metagame replied that it was their idea, and that Nomad is focused on \u201cmore important things.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It was Metagame\u2019s idea, and built by Metagame \u2014 we just brought it Nomad.
