{"id":66903,"date":"2022-09-09T11:00:07","date_gmt":"2022-09-09T08:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=66903"},"modified":"2025-09-07T03:47:25","modified_gmt":"2025-09-07T00:47:25","slug":"white-house-threatens-to-ban-bitcoin-mining-over-its-environmental-impact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/white-house-threatens-to-ban-bitcoin-mining-over-its-environmental-impact\/","title":{"rendered":"White House threatens to ban Bitcoin mining over its environmental impact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>American lawmakers and regulators are weighing stringent measures against Bitcoin mining because of its large carbon footprint, according to a <a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/09-2022-Crypto-Assets-and-Climate-Report.pdf\\\">report<\/a> from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.<\/p>\n<p>According to the document, miners are urged to curb greenhouse-gas emissions with the involvement of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Energy and other federal agencies.<\/p>\n<p>The White House has also proposed that the government collect more data on the sector\u2019s energy use, promote energy-efficiency standards, and &#8216;the use of environmentally safe technologies&#8217; for mining.<\/p>\n<p>If these measures fail to reduce the impact, energy-intensive Bitcoin mining could be banned.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\\\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\\\">\n<p>&#8216;If these measures prove ineffective at reducing the impact, the administration should consider executive actions, and Congress could consider legislation to limit or prohibit the use of energy-intensive consensus algorithms for mining crypto assets,&#8217; the report says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It also mentions the forthcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ethereums-move-to-proof-of-stake-pos-what-you-need-to-know\">transition of the Ethereum network from Proof-of-Work to Proof-of-Stake<\/a>. The White House called this move &#8216;the most notable response to calls to use less energy-intensive consensus mechanisms.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in April 2022, the New York State Assembly\u2019s lower chamber <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/new-york-assembly-approves-two-year-moratorium-on-crypto-mining\">backed a moratorium<\/a> on mining powered by electricity generated from carbon sources. The bill <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/new-york-state-senate-backs-two-year-mining-moratorium\">later gained approval<\/a> from the state Senate.<\/p>\n<p>In August, members of the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce sent requests to mining companies Core Scientific, Riot Blockchain, Marathon Digital and Stronghold Digital for <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/us-lawmakers-demand-environmental-data-from-cryptocurrency-miners\">data on the environmental impact of their operations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Is Bitcoin really bad for the environment?
