For centuries it has allowed people to express themselves and tell stories.<\/p>\n<p>First there was cave painting, then oil paintings and photography. Now the era of \u201cvisual\u201d artificial intelligence and, in particular, <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-neural-network\">neural networks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>ForkLog has investigated which AI models are used to work with images and whether such systems could replace artists.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-text-wrappers-keypoints article_keypoints\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Researchers began applying image-creation algorithms in the 1950s\u20131960s.<\/li>\n<li>Neural networks allow copying artists\u2019 styles, turning sketches into photorealistic illustrations, \u201cbringing to life\u201d portraits, and creating new images.<\/li>\n<li>The cost of developing and training an algorithm ranges from zero to hundreds of millions of dollars.<\/li>\n<li>AI art can inspire, but its accessibility may raise a number of issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"chapter_1\">A Brief History of AI Art<\/h2>\n<p>The history of generated AI art can be traced back to the advent of machine graphics and the invention of the computer. Early researchers used basic algorithms to create simple patterns and forms.<\/p>\n<p>In 1967 the German mathematician and scientist Frieder Nake developed a portfolio titled <a href=\"https:\/\/spalterdigital.com\/artworks\/nr-1-series-2-5-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Matrix Multiplications<\/a>, consisting of 12 images. He created a square matrix and filled it with numbers that were multiplied by themselves in sequence.<\/p>\n<p>The researcher translated the results into images of given intervals, assigning a visual sign in a particular form and colour for each value. A boom in high-quality tools built on various algorithms makes neural creativity accessible to anyone with a smartphone connected to the internet.<\/p>\n<p>AI models let users copy painters\u2019 styles, convert sketches into photorealistic illustrations, \u201cbring portraits to life\u201d and create new images. Different tasks employ different or similar approaches and tools.<\/p>\n<p>Neural style transfer (NST) is a method based on convolutional neural networks that can create a painting imitating the style of another image. They play a key role in image creation. There are even marketplaces where people can buy prompts for a particular visual style.<\/p>\n<p>Developers train AI generators on vast corpora of images and their textual descriptions, teaching the model to recognise connections between them. They also frequently use the diffusion process\u2014where generation begins from random points and gradually improves the image, approaching the prompt and reducing noise.<\/p>\n<p>Most popular AI generators impose content restrictions: they cannot depict nudity, violence, realistic faces, or political figures. Tools such as <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/dall-e-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">OpenAI DALL-E 2<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/imagen.research.google\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Google Imagen<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/discord.com\/invite\/midjourney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Midjourney<\/a> are examples. Sometimes access is paid.<\/p>\n<p>But there are systems without such filters, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/huggingface.co\/spaces\/stabilityai\/stable-diffusion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Stable Diffusion<\/a>. The answer ranges from zero to several hundred million dollars.<\/p>\n<p>First, creating and training an AI algorithm requires expertise. Users without programming skills and with little appetite for courses should first learn the principles of neural networks. There are many free articles, resources and services such as Google\u2019s Teachable Machine that can help.<\/p>\n<p>Also needed are programming language skills such as Python and a library for development and training of neural networks\u2014TensorFlow, PyTorch or another.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that, one must assemble a training dataset tailored to the task, which can be created in house, sourced from open repositories or purchased. To develop a text-to-image generator you will need a set of images and their textual descriptions.<\/p>\n<p>The accuracy of the model depends on the quality and quantity of data, as well as on the hardware and computational resources employed.<\/p>\n<p>With all of the above, it is possible to build an image-focused neural network for free.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, large companies like Meta, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft and Alphabet are investing tens of billions of dollars in such products. Expenses cover research, development, training, verification, deployment, commercialisation and ongoing support. Sometimes projects take years and may be abandoned or, conversely, become indispensable.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"chapter_4\">Advantages and Disadvantages of Visual AI Algorithms<\/h2>\n<p>Among the advantages of using neural networks to create artworks is the generation of realistic data. Such images can find use in films, advertising, games and other sectors.<\/p>\n<p>AI algorithms think in unconventional ways. They can create images never seen before, compose objects in unfamiliar ways and mix textures in original fashion. Such art can inspire larger projects.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to constant improvements in technology and data, AI art also continues to evolve and bring new ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the algorithms can speed up some tasks. Sometimes this is an asset, but when creating a work of art, many people require a narrative.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the limited size of training datasets AI art can become monotonous. Without constant upgrading and training on new data, generated images may begin to repeat and lose their novelty.<\/p>\n<p>Also, developers cannot fully control the creative process of the neural networks. After training, the algorithm yields results based on fixed weights, and if the result is unsatisfactory, the model must be retrained.<\/p>\n<p>But the core concerns around AI relate to ethics. Developers cannot always control how the technology is disseminated and used. Algorithms cannot be regarded as authors of artworks, but the creators bear responsibility for their misbehaviour.<\/p>\n<p>The ease of access to the technology can enable wrongdoing as AI-generated images could be used to deceive people, steal personal data and spread hate speech.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"chapter_5\">Will Neural Networks Replace Artists?<\/h2>\n<p>Once photography was considered a new trend in creativity. After nearly 200 years, it did not replace artists and art-world figures, but compelled them to evolve and adapt.<\/p>\n<p>That gave rise to a new generation of creative individuals. Artists and photographers began collaborating to create works capable of surprising, captivating and provoking thoughts about beauty.<\/p>\n<p>Art, in whatever form it takes, invites people to feel.
