{"id":70097,"date":"2022-11-15T16:07:57","date_gmt":"2022-11-15T14:07:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=70097"},"modified":"2025-09-08T00:07:49","modified_gmt":"2025-09-07T21:07:49","slug":"sam-bankman-fried-things-could-have-ended-far-worse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/sam-bankman-fried-things-could-have-ended-far-worse\/","title":{"rendered":"Sam Bankman-Fried: things could have ended far worse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former FTX chief Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), in an interview<a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/14\/technology\/ftx-sam-bankman-fried-crypto-bankruptcy.html\\\"> New York Times<\/a>, repeatedly expressed regret <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ftx-group-files-for-bankruptcy-sam-bankman-fried-resigns-as-ceo\">about the collapse of the Bitcoin exchange<\/a> and acknowledged that events could have unfolded in a more dramatic fashion.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-margin-trading\">margin position<\/a> \u201cwas significantly larger than he realised\u201d \u2014 \u201cby billions of dollars.\u201d The former FTX chief would have been glad if it had been smaller.<\/p>\n<p>SBF agreed that he had expanded his business interests too rapidly and had missed signs of trouble.<\/p>\n<p>Bankman-Fried declined to provide details, discuss possible imprisonment, or reveal his location, citing security concerns.<\/p>\n<p>He admitted that lately he has slept and played video games that \u201cclear the mind and help him relax.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\\\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\\\">\n<p><em>\u201cYou might think that I would not be sleeping right now, and instead I am sleeping a little,\u201d<\/em> Bankman-Fried said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The publication noted that the former billionaire looked \u201cremarkably calm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The former FTX chief said that he is working with regulators, the bankruptcy court, and that the firm will do its utmost to serve the interests of customers and shareholders.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about his relationships with colleagues, Bankman-Fried said that he maintained close contact with no more than 15 employees and that he was no longer romantically involved with Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison.<\/p>\n<p>According to sources, SBF participated in decisions on large deals. Boundaries between FTX and the trading firm \u201cbasically did not exist.\u201d Ellison sat beside monitors displaying the exchange\u2019s trading data, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The former billionaire called the criticism of Binance chief Changpeng Zhao in his talks with regulators a \u201cstrategically misguided move.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On 6 November, the latter decided <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ftx-group-files-for-bankruptcy-sam-bankman-fried-resigns-as-ceo\">to divest from the FTX exchange\u2019s FTT utility token<\/a>. Assets together with BUSD, totaling about $2.1 billion, were the result of the company\u2019s exit from its portfolio investment in the platform.<\/p>\n<p>According to sources, Ellison took the blame for the company\u2019s collapse. She said that Alameda took out loans to fund venture investments. After the market fell in the spring, counterparties demanded repayment. To fulfil obligations, the firm used customer funds from FTX. She said that besides her and Bankman-Fried, two other employees knew about it.<\/p>\n<p>A source for the New York Times confirmed that Alameda Research had an outstanding debt to FTX in the amount of $10 billion, previously reported by The Wall Street Journal citing its own sources.<\/p>\n<p>In response to his thread, in which over several days he wrote the words \u201cI have no idea what happened\u201d in separate letters, the former billionaire said that he was improvising in this way.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with CoinDesk, one insider described the teams at FTX and Alameda Research as a \u201cgang of kids in the Bahamas.\u201d The company itself was a place full of conflicts of interest, cronyism, and lack of oversight.<\/p>\n<p>Sam Bankman-Fried and his inner circle, consisting of former Jane Street colleagues and MIT classmates, ten people in total, lived in a luxury penthouse in the Bahamas. Many of them were romantically involved. In particular, the former CEO occasionally dated Ellison.<\/p>\n<p>According to former employees, they learned of the company\u2019s problems from CZ\u2019s tweet [Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao] about the purchase of FTX and thought it was a joke. Bankman-Fried kept quiet. He reached out to employees a week after the crisis began, supporting those who wished to leave the company.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\\\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\\\">\n<p><em>\u201cGary [Wang, FTX CTO], Nishad [Singh, head of development at FTX], and Sam control the code, the exchange-matching engine, and the funds.
