This was reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/tech\/tech-trends\/article\/3208481\/chinese-economist-calls-review-rigid-cryptocurrency-ban-digital-yuan-fails-take\">South China Morning Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to Huang, who is currently a professor of economics at the National School of Development of Peking University, blockchain technologies are &#8220;very valuable&#8221; to financial systems.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;A ban on cryptocurrencies may be practical in the short term, but the question of whether it will be sustainable in the long term deserves careful analysis,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The expert stressed the importance of developing an appropriate regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;There is no particularly good way to ensure stability and functioning in terms of how cryptocurrencies should be regulated, especially for a developing country, but ultimately an effective approach may need to be found,&#8221; the economist noted.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>At the same time, he agreed that cryptocurrencies, notably Bitcoin, carry a range of risks:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Bitcoin is more like a digital asset than a currency because it lacks intrinsic value. And a substantial portion of Bitcoin transactions is linked to illicit activity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Huang noted that the digital yuan has yet to gain broad adoption. The possibility of allowing private institutions to issue stablecoins backed by the national digital currency, he said, remains &#8220;a very delicate&#8221; issue.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of 2022, the PBC included <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-central-bank-digital-currency-cbdc\">CBDC<\/a> in the monetary base calculation.
