This was stated by Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/videos\/2023-02-27\/imf-on-more-regulations-for-private-cryptocurrencies-video\">Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She said that regulation of the industry is a top priority for the Financial Stability Board, the IMF and the Bank for International Settlements.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Our first priority is to distinguish between central bank digital currencies [<a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-central-bank-digital-currency-cbdc\">CBDC<\/a>], state-backed, and publicly issued crypto assets and stablecoins, she explained.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>At the same time, the option to ban cryptocurrencies &#8216;should not be taken off the table&#8217; in the event regulation slows and a higher risk to consumers or financial stability arises, she added.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/imf-urges-a-coordinated-response-to-cryptocurrencies\">called for<\/a> a &#8216;coordinated response&#8217; to cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in September 2022 the IMF <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/imf-urges-regulators-to-catch-up-on-digital-asset-regulation\">emphasised<\/a> that bankruptcies of issuers, exchanges and hedge funds have provided additional impetus for the drive to create comprehensive regulation of digital assets.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The IMF would prefer to regulate digital assets but does not rule out banning them if risks to financial stability rise.
