The results of Project Meridian will help improve the regulator&#8217;s <span data-descr=\"a real-time gross settlement system that enables the instant transfer of funds and\/or securities\" class=\"old_tooltip\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Real-time_gross_settlement\" title=\"\">RTGS<\/a><\/span> system.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Synchronising the change in asset ownership to the respective change in funds eliminates the risk of one side not delivering, also reducing liquidity and transaction costs. It is &quot;relatively easy&quot; to extend it to other asset classes such as foreign currencies. As a result, settlement times, costs and transaction-related risks are reduced, the report says.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-216.webp\" alt=\"image-216\" class=\"wp-image-204833\"\/><figcaption>The synchronization network in Project Meridian. Data: BIS.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The pilot project could serve as a basis for a settlement system using<a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-central-bank-digital-currency-cbdc\"> CBDC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&quot;Synchronization could be a catalyst for innovation in wholesale payments and support the emergence of new infrastructures using national digital currencies,&quot;<\/em> \u2014 the document says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The authors note the challenges that may arise in using the system.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, a mechanism for identity verification will need to be provided. Additional factors could include restrictions on RTGS operating hours, as many jurisdictions consider revising the timetable of national payment infrastructures.<\/p>\n<p>The implementation of the system may also raise a range of legal questions such as the final point of no return for settlements, the digital representation of ownership rights to assets, and preventing the arbitrage of client funds by commercial banks until the transaction date.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2023, BIS<a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bis-develops-model-for-cross-border-cbdc-settlements\"> completed<\/a> Project Icebreaker, aimed at creating a cross-border retail payment system for CBDC.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, Bank of America analysts stated that central bank digital currencies could fundamentally transform global finance. <\/p>\n<p>Back in April, media reported plans by the Bank of England<a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/journalists-reveal-bank-of-england-forming-a-team-to-launch-a-cbdc\"> to form a team<\/a> of 30 specialists for CBDC development.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, regulator spokeswoman Katie Forchun<a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bank-of-england-envisions-coexistence-of-cbdc-and-cryptocurrencies\"> allowed<\/a> the existence of an ecosystem of various forms of money, including national digital currencies and <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-are-stablecoins\">stablecoins<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and Bank of England tested a distributed ledger technology-based platform for interbank settlements.
