The study results were published in the journal <a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41593-023-01304-9.epdf?sharing_token=ke_QzrH9sbW4zI9GE95h8NRgN0jAjWel9jnR3ZoTv0NG3whxCLvPExlNSoYRnDSfIOgKVxuQpIpQTlvwbh56sqHnheubLg6SBcc6UcbQsOlow1nfuGXb3PNEL23ZAWnzuZ7-R0djBgGH8-ZqQhwGVIO9Qqyt76JOoiymgFtM74rh1xTvjVbLBg-RIZDQtjiOI7VAb8pHr9d_LgUzKRcQ9w%3D%3D&#038;tracking_referrer=www.vice.com\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noopener nofollow\\\" title=\\\"\\\">Nature Neuroscience<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To collect brain activity data, participants were placed in an <a href=\\\"https:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%A4%D1%83%D0%BD%D0%BA%D1%86%D0%B8%D0%BE%D0%BD%D0%B0%D0%BB%D1%8C%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%8F_%D0%BC%D0%B0%D0%B3%D0%BD%D0%B8%D1%82%D0%BD%D0%BE-%D1%80%D0%B5%D0%B7%D0%BE%D0%BD%D0%B0%D0%BD%D1%81%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%8F_%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%BC%D0%BE%D0%B3%D1%80%D0%B0%D1%84%D0%B8%D1%8F\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noopener nofollow\\\" title=\\\"\\\">\u0444\u041c\u0420\u0422<\/a> scanner and were allowed to listen to several hours of podcasts. Next, the researchers created a decoder algorithm that operates on the principle of chatbots such as ChatGPT or Bard.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, the trained AI system was able to generate a stream of text when a participant listens to recordings or imagines telling a new story.<\/p>\n<p>The produced text is not an exact transcript. According to the researchers, the algorithm is more likely to capture general thoughts and ideas.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\\\"https:\/\/cns.utexas.edu\/news\/podcast\/brain-activity-decoder-can-reveal-stories-peoples-minds\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noopener nofollow\\\" title=\\\"\\\">press release<\/a>, the trained system yields text that closely or exactly matches the intended meaning of the participant&#8217;s original words in about half the cases.<\/p>\n<p>For example, when a participant heard the words \\&#8221;I still haven&#8217;t obtained a driver&#8217;s license yet\\&#8221; during the experiment, the thoughts were transformed into \\&#8221;she hasn&#8217;t even started learning to drive yet\\&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\\\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\\\">\n<p>\\&#8221;For a non-invasive method, this is a real leap forward compared with what was done previously, when typically individual words or short phrases were used,\\&#8221; said one of the study&#8217;s leaders, Alexander Khut.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In his view, the decoding model can sustain lengthy sessions and handle complex ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Participants were also asked to watch four silent videos while in the scanner. As a result, the AI system was able to accurately recognise \\&#8221;specific events\\&#8221; from the clips, the researchers said.<\/p>\n<p>The brain activity decoder cannot be used outside the laboratory because it requires an <a href=\\\"https:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%A4%D1%83%D0%BD%D0%BA%D1%86%D0%B8%D0%BE%D0%BD%D0%B0%D0%BB%D1%8C%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%8F_%D0%BC%D0%B0%D0%B3%D0%BD%D0%B8%D1%82%D0%BD%D0%BE-%D1%80%D0%B5%D0%B7%D0%BE%D0%BD%D0%B0%D0%BD%D1%81%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%8F_%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%BC%D0%BE%D0%B3%D1%80%D0%B0%D1%84%D0%B8%D1%8F\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noopener nofollow\\\" title=\\\"\\\">\u0444\u041c\u0420\u0422<\/a> scanner.
