This was reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/7kx84b\/ai-generated-pentagon-explosion-hoax-twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Vice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Accounts such as WarMonitors, BloombergFeed and RT published a photo showing a large cloud of smoke rising near a government building. Among them is the melding of the fence and a mobile barrier designed to fence off the crowd.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Confident that this picture claiming to show an \u00abexplosion near the pentagon\u00bb is AI generated. <\/p>\n<p>Check out the frontage of the building, and the way the fence melds into the crowd barriers. The platform\u2019s management also suspended BloombergFeed\u2019s account, which had continued to spread the misinformation.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the news, stock markets briefly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insider.com\/ai-generated-hoax-explosion-pentagon-viral-markets-dipped-2023-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">fell<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Government officials had to intervene. The official account of the Arlington Fire Department refuted the rumours of explosions.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abThere are no explosions or incidents on the Pentagon grounds or nearby; there is no immediate danger to the public\u00bb, the statement says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PFPAOfficial?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@PFPAOfficial<\/a> and the ACFD are aware of a social media report circulating online about an explosion near the Pentagon. In their words, the ability to acquire a verification badge could amplify the reach of misinformation campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time fakes have circulated from blue-check accounts. In early May, several verified accounts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/wxjd4y\/verified-twitter-accounts-spread-misinfo-about-imminent-nuclear-strike\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">falsely reported<\/a> an impending nuclear strike by Russia on the capital of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, realistic images of Pope Francis in a puffer jacket and of the arrest of former US President Donald Trump circulated online.
