The defendant is Attorney General Austin Knudsen.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We are challenging Montana\u2019s unconstitutional TikTok ban to protect our business and the hundreds of thousands of TikTok users in Montana. We believe our legal challenge will prevail based on an exceedingly strong set of precedents and facts.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 TikTokComms (@TikTokComms) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TikTokComms\/status\/1660738781149040640?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 22, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>According to the complaint, the ban violates the right to free speech guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and a number of other laws.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"colab\"><strong>Code generator to appear in Google Colab<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In the coming months, Google <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/technology\/developers\/google-colab-ai-coding-features\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">will add<\/a> AI-powered features to Colab for automatic programming.<\/p>\n<p>The cloud environment will use the Codey family of models based on PaLM 2. The algorithms were trained on a large corpus of code fragments with permissive licenses from external sources and tuned for Python.<\/p>\n<p>Among the new features:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>code generation from natural-language prompts;<\/li>\n<li>auto-completion of code;<\/li>\n<li>a chat bot for answering programming questions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Initially, the update will be available to paid Colab subscribers in the US. Later Google will make coding AI features free for a wider audience.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"meta\"><strong>Meta trains AI to understand 4,000 living languages<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Meta <a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2023\/05\/ai-massively-multilingual-speech-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">unveiled<\/a> the Massively Multilingual Speech (MMS) language AI models. The project&#8217;s source code is <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/facebookresearch\/fairseq\/tree\/main\/examples\/mms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">available<\/a> on GitHub.<\/p>\n<p>MMS can identify more than 4,000 spoken languages, about 40 times more than existing equivalents. Data: Meta.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To train the models, developers used the New Testament, on the basis of which they created two datasets. The first contains audio and text in 1,107 languages. The second includes unlabeled speech recordings in 3,809 dialects.<\/p>\n<p>The company warned that MMS may sometimes misinterpret certain words and phrases. They also noted that the Bible contains bias and distortions.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tencent\"><strong>Tencent deploys palm-recognition payment system<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Tencent launched palm-recognition technology to pay for Beijing metro rides via WeChat Pay.<\/p>\n<p>The system was developed by YouTu, the company\u2019s AI lab. It identifies not only palms but also veins, and takes into account arm extension during scanning and other characteristics. According to the developers, the technology works under varying lighting conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Users must link their WeChat account to the palm-recognition device and scan their palm at a dedicated auto-mat at the station. Then they can pay for a ride by waving their hand over the scanner at the turnstile.<\/p>\n<p>The company tested the system in Shenzhen. In the future it plans to deploy the technology in offices, campuses, shopping malls, restaurants and other places.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bard\"><strong>Bard learned to search for images<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Bard chatbot <a href=\"https:\/\/bard.google.com\/updates?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">can<\/a> show images from Google&#8217;s search engine.<\/p>\n<p>For example, when asked about the sights of New Orleans (Louisiana, USA), the bot will provide a list of places and their photos. Data: Google.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Users can also request images directly from the AI.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"photoshop\"><strong>Image generator added to Photoshop<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Adobe <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.adobe.com\/en\/publish\/2023\/05\/23\/future-of-photoshop-powered-by-adobe-firefly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">added<\/a> the Generative Fill AI tool to Photoshop.<\/p>\n<p>The technology is based on Firefly models. It allows, via English-language text prompts, to scale images, as well as to add and remove objects. It allows quick image edits even without prompts.<\/p>\n<p>Generative Fill is available in Photoshop beta for PC. A full release is planned for the second half of 2023.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"youtube\"><strong>YouTube uses AI to describe Shorts videos<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>YouTube <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deepmind.com\/blog\/working-together-with-youtube\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">deployed<\/a> Flamingo, a visual language model, to create descriptions for Shorts.<\/p>\n<p>The DeepMind-developed algorithm analyzes the opening frames of the clip and attempts to understand its content. The model-generated descriptions are stored as metadata for \u201cbetter video classification and matching search results with viewer queries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to YouTube Shorts product manager Todd Sherman, the AI text meets the platform&#8217;s responsibility standards. He added that situations where the technology could cast a video in a bad light are unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>A DeepMind spokesperson said Flamingo has already generated descriptions for many videos, including the most viewed.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"draggan\"><strong>Scientists create image-manipulation algorithm<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, MIT and Google developed an AI algorithm Drag GAN for manipulating images.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"DragGAN 01\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j7bnaSCMBA4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The technology is similar to Photoshop&#8217;s Warp tool. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2305.10973.pdf\">study<\/a>, it does not simply move pixels but uses AI to recreate the underlying object.<\/p>\n<p>With Drag GAN you can change object sizes and appearance with a couple of mouse clicks. The algorithm also allows rotating objects like 3D models.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers say the approach can not only create occlusions of objects but also deform them according to rigidity, for example when bending a horse&#8217;s leg.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"flood-hub\"><strong>Google expands flood forecasting tool to 80 countries<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Google <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/outreach-initiatives\/sustainability\/flood-hub-ai-flood-forecasting-more-countries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">expanded<\/a> the availability of the Flood Hub AI flood-forecasting system.<\/p>\n<p>The platform can be used by governments, aid organizations and residents of 80 countries across the Asia-Pacific region, Africa, Europe, the Americas. It now covers areas with high shares of the population at risk from natural disasters, such as the Netherlands, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar.<\/p>\n<p>Flood Hub uses two models to forecast floods caused by river and creek overflows seven days ahead. The system estimates the amount of water entering the flow, the expected flood height, and the areas affected.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mind-video\"><strong>AI learns to transform brain activity into video<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Singaporean and Chinese researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2305.11675\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">developed<\/a> an AI algorithm MinD-Video for reconstructing video from brain activity data.<\/p>\n<p>The system is a &#8216;two-module pipeline&#8217; consisting of a trained fMRI encoder and a tuned version of the Stable Diffusion image generator. The clips turned out to be &#8216;quite high-quality,&#8217; as evidenced by motion and scene dynamics, they added.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ai-lore\"><strong>Writer uses AI to create 97 books<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Fiction writer Tim Bushe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/ai-books-art-money-artificial-intelligence-1799923\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">employed<\/a> AI to write the AI Lore series.<\/p>\n<p>The author used ChatGPT and Anthropic Claude chatbots, as well as the Midjourney image generator. Each work contains 2,000 to 5,000 words and includes 40 to 140 illustrations.<\/p>\n<p>In nine months, Bushe produced 97 books.
